“Let’s get that humidifier. It’ll help him sleep more comfortably.”

Fifteen minutes later, the humidifier was up and running in Jake’s room. Before she took it upstairs, she told everyone to go to bed. She assured them she’d keep a close eye on Jake.

She took his temperature again, then she turned down the light and sat down in the easy chair. “Close your eyes and get some sleep.”

“You too.”

“You just worry about you.”

After some stubbornness and taking some time trying to get comfortable, Jake finally fell asleep. Ember leaned back in the chair. It was comfortable, and she fell asleep to the hum of the humidifier and Jake’s labored breathing.

The sun coming through the curtains woke her, and Ember sat and looked at Jake. He was still asleep, but he was flush. His fever was back. She went to the bathroom, then took a momentto look around the room. Like the bathroom, it was very nice. A little masculine, but she assumed that’s because he moved into the room after his wife died. Jacob had told her they’d switched rooms once Rachel was gone.

There were two pictures on the dresser and she went to look at them. One was a young Jake and Genny with a beautiful Indian woman and a handsome man who resembled Jacob. Grandma and Grandpa. The other picture was a family picture of J.T., Sawyer and Sage at a very young age. And Jake and Rachel. She was lovely and Sage looked just like her. Ember wondered if Jake thought of Rachel every time he looked at Sage. It’d be hard not to. The picture made her sad and reminded her that once Jake remembered who she was, he might not feel the same. Not since he has his memories of Rachel back. She had to trust their love was strong enough to weather whatever emotions he might feel once he got his five months back.

When she heard, “Are you snooping around my room?”

She turned to Jake. “No. Well, maybe a little.”

He started coughing and had to sit up to try to clear his lungs. Ember went to him and rubbed his back until he got past the worst of it. He dropped back onto the pillow.

Ember took the water glass and took it to the bathroom to refill it, then came back and gave him three more pills. “I’m going to call Dr. Curtissoon. Are you hungry?”

Jake shook his head.

“When did you eat last?”

“Lunch.”

“You need to eat something. Even if it’s just broth or applesauce. I’ll go see what I can find.”

He nodded and closed his eyes. He wasn’t any better.

She went downstairs and found J.T. in the kitchen. She smiled at him. “Did you sleep at all?”

“A little. How about you?”

“A little. Your father slept through, until a few minutes ago. Once he went to sleep, he slept without waking. Or at least waking up coughing.”

“Good. Do you want some coffee?”

“Please. Then I need to find something he’ll eat. He says he’s not hungry, but he has to be.”

“Yeah. He ate a sandwich around one yesterday. He should be starving.” He went to a cupboard. “There’s some chicken broth in here. Is it true what they say about chicken broth?”

“It depends on who you ask. I side with the old wife’s tale. I think it has some magical properties.”

J.T. took the can out of the cupboard. “Well, I’d say Dad could use some magic right about now.”

Ember got Jake to drink some broth while she called Dr. Curtis. He told her he’d be there within the hour.

She sat in the chair and watched Jake finish the broth in his cup. “He’ll be here soon.”

“And what’s he going to tell me?”

“That you have pneumonia.”

“So why do I need him?”
