“Because he’s got the drugs. You’re going to need antibiotics to get over this.”

Chapter thirty-one

"That is just a little taste of heaven."

Dr. Curtis confirmed Ember’s diagnosis. He prescribed some antibiotics and told Jake to drink plenty of fluids and rest, even after he started feeling better, which he would in a day or two. Rest for at least a week.

“You probably won’t be a hundred percent for a month or so.”

Jake promised he’d take it easy, then glanced at Ember. “I’m pretty sure Ember won’t let me do anything but.”

She smiled. “That’s right. Seems I have two O’Connells to take care of now.”

Dr. Curtis laughed, then looked at her. “Can you give us a moment, Ember?”

“Of course.” She gave Jake a nod, then left the room.

The doctor looked at Jake. “Aside from this nastiness, how are you doing, Jake? Has anything come back to you?”

Jake sighed. “No. But it’s like this naggingfeeling in my head. I can’t shake it. I feel like I’m so close to remembering, but it won’t come. Like an itch I can’t scratch.”

“There are some things you could try.”

“Meditation?”

He smiled. “No. Something a little more extreme. I was thinking about talking to a therapist. Maybe even hypnosis.”

Jake shook his head. “No. I don’t want to do that.” He coughed for a couple of moments. “It’ll come back. I just have to be patient.”

Dr. Curtis nodded his head. “Okay. Let me know if you change your mind.” He pointed at Jake. “Now. Lie back down. I want you in bed at least until tomorrow. Preferably until the next day. And no riding a horse or even sneaking off to the barn. You don’t need to be breathing in the dusty barn air.”

“Got it. Thanksgiving is in five days. Do you think I’ll be up to eating turkey?”

“If you take it easy for a few days. You should be up to eating a lot of turkey.”

Jake was out of it most of the rest of the day. Ember checked on him every couple of hours. And in between her visits, the kids came in. Jacob even managed his way up the stairs for a visit. But his best companion was Rosie, who had been by his side since last night. Sawyer took her outside to do her business a couple of times, but she always came right back. She’d jump up on the bed, and curl up next to his legs, with her headwith in petting range.

By Sunday night, he was feeling a little better and he was actually hungry for dinner. Sage brought him some split pea soup, which was wonderful. But he got full halfway through the bowl.

When he noticed she kept glancing at him, he gave her a smile. “Hey. I’m fine. I feel better already. And tomorrow, I’ll feel even better.”

She moved to the bed and sat next to him. “I just need everyone to be better. You and granddad. I want things back the way they were.”

“Well, I’m on my way. Granddad might take a little longer to get there. But he will. He’s made great progress since Ember got here.”

She nodded. “He has. I can see it.”

“So.” He brushed some hair out of her eyes. “Stop worrying.”

She nodded, then studied her hands for a moment, before glancing at him again. “Can we talk about something else?”

“Anything. What’s up?”

“School.”

“What about it?”

She looked up at him. “I don’t want to go back.”
