“John?”

They ran toward each other and embraced. “Oh my God. How could I have forgotten you?”

She shook her head and kissed him. He pulled her in closer and tried to take in her face and her hair. He slid off her cap and tossed it. “Ember.” He kissed her. “Dammit. He picked her up and carried her toward the porch. He went up the steps and stopped in front of the broken door.

He looked at her and started laughing. “Well, shit.” She held up the doorknob she still had in her hand. He took a step back, then kicked the door in.

She tossed the doorknob over her shoulder as Jake carried her inside and closed the door with his foot. It banged against the broken doorjamb and opened back up a few inches. He continued to the bedroom and put her down, then kissed her again.

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

She put her hands on his face. “I wanted to. The doctor said I shouldn’t. That you needed to remember on your own.”

“I remember it all, honey. Every second of that five months.” He pulled her in close. “My guardian angel.” He felt like he did that first night they spent together. He wanted every part of her all at once. “I’ll never forget you again, my love.”

They started undressing each other, cursingand laughing at all the layers they had on against the cold day. When they finally fell onto the bed, Jake pulled her in close. “I’ve had this ache inside of me since I got back. I didn’t know what it was. I didn’t know what I was missing. What I needed. Now I know. It was you. My sweet Ember. And now I have you. And I’m never going to let you go.”

“I was so afraid my John Sherlock was lost forever.”

“I’m right here. And I’m really happy that lucky son of a bitch is me.”

Ember was curled up in the curve of Jake’s body as they both laid on their sides and snuggled under the blanket.

He kissed her hair. “I should go start a fire.”

She put a hand on his arm. “No. Don’t leave me.”

“Not even to the living room?”

“No. Not yet.”

He nuzzled her neck and kissed the back of it. “Tell me how you got here.”

“Genny.”

“What? Genny knows about Santa Fe?”

“Yes. She tracked you back to the hotel. And since the room was registered to Everett, she got help from the local authorities to get his contact information. She called him. And he gave her my number. We spent hours talking over severaldays, and a week later, I was here.”

“And Dr. Curtis advised you both not to tell me?”

She turned to face him. “Yes. I’m so sorry.”

“First time my sister has ever been able to keep a secret.”

“Don’t be upset with her.”

He shook his head. “I’m not. I’m not upset with you either. If the situation were reversed, I probably would’ve done the same thing.”

“It was so hard. Seeing you every day.”

He kissed her. “That’s all behind us now.”

When they heard someone call out, “Ember?” Jake sat up.

“Shit. That’s Sawyer.”

Ember raised onto an elbow and pulled the blanket up over her chest. “What’s he doing here?”
