“The damn horses must’ve gone back to the barn.”

“Will he come inside?”

“No. But I need to go talk to him before he sends out a search party.”

He got out of bed and started getting dressed.

Ember watched him. “What are you going to tell him?”

Jake shrugged. “I guess I’ll tell him the truth.”

Jake left the room and crossed through the living room, then went out the broken front door. Sawyer was standing in the yard with his back to the door and his cell phone to his ear.

Jake remained on the porch. “Sawyer?”

Sawyer turned, surprised to see him, and he talked into the phone. “Never mind. I found him.” He ended the call and tucked the phone in his back pocket. “Where have you been? The horses showed up at the barn without you. We thought something happened.”

“Everything’s fine, son. I didn’t secure the horses.” He went down the steps. “I was a little distracted. I got my memories back. I know where I was for those five months.”

“What? When? Where were you?”

“I was in Santa Fe.” Ember came through the door and stood on the porch, and he glanced over his shoulder at her. “I was there with Ember.”

Sawyer looked at her, then returned his eyes to Jake. “You were together in Santa Fe?”

“Yes.”

Sawyer shook his head. “I don’t understand.”

Jake moved toward him. “Let’s take a walk.”

“I don’t want to take a walk, Dad. Just tell me what’s going on.”

Jake took a breath. “In June, when I fell off the radar, I woke up in a hospital in Santa Fe. I’d been mugged, and I had no recollection of who I was. You guys, Dad, the ranch. Nothing. My mind was a black void, with nothing but the memory of waking up and seeing Ember’s face. She was my nurse. But she became so much more than that. She took care of me. She kept me from losing my mind. She took me to her brother’s house on alake. And we spent the next five months there. If my memory hadn’t come back in Salt Lake. I’d still be there.”

“So, you’re saying you’re together? Like…you know what I mean.”

“Yes.”

Sawyer glanced at the door. “What happened to the door?”

Jake glanced at Ember and she gave him a small smile. “I’m going to go make some coffee.”

She went inside and Jake looked at Sawyer again. “The knob broke. It wouldn’t open. And I really needed to get inside.”

Sawyer took a step back and ran his hands through his hair. “Okay.”

“Genny tracked down Ember and brought her here. The hope was I’d remember her when I saw her. But I didn’t. Not until today.”

“So, she’s been waiting for you to remember?”

“Yes.”

Sawyer took two more steps back away from Jake. “I need to go process this information,”

“Of course. Um…as far as your brother and sister…”

“Don’t worry. I wouldn’t even know where to begin.” He turned and went to the truck he’d come in. He stopped before getting in. “Will you be home for dinner?”
