“Yeah. I’ll be there.”

Sawyer nodded, then got into the truck, andJake watched as he drove away. Ember came off the porch and put her arm around him.

“Is he going to be okay?”

“I don’t know. Probably.” He turned to her and kissed her. “Did you say something about coffee?”

“Yes. It should be done. And I’ll take you up on your offer to start a fire in the woodstove. It’s getting cold.”

They headed for the porch and Jake glanced over his shoulder. “He’ll be fine. They’ll all be fine.”

“Of course they will. Because they love you and want you to be happy.”

They stopped in front of the broken door. “After coffee, I’ll go find someone to fix this for you. I don’t want you going to bed tonight with a busted door.”

Ember giggled. “Of all the romantic things you’ve done since we met. I think that is the most romantic.”

“That’s a pretty low bar.”

“No. It was perfect.”

Chapter thirty-six

"I suppose we would've missed you sooner or later."

J.T. came down the stairs from his loft and once he was in the barn, he could hear Sawyer working out in the gym. He went and stood in the doorway and watched his brother attacking the heavy bag.

“Who are you mad at?”

Sawyer stopped and looked at J.T. “Come hold this for me.”

J.T. went to the far side of the bag and put his hands on it. Sawyer took a moment, then began hitting the bag again. He continued until he was breathing heavily, then finally stopped and took a step back.

J.T. let go of the bag. “Take a breather, man.”

Sawyer took a couple of deep breaths, then went to a bottle of water and drank half of it. He sat on the weight bench and removed the tape from his knuckles, then flexed his hands a couple of times, before wiping his face with the tail of his sleeveless t-shirt. He looked up at J.T. andshrugged.

J.T. leaned on one of the machines. “What’s up with you?”

“Nothing.”

“Bullshit.”

“I’m just working through something. I’ll be fine.”

“And you don’t want to talk about it?”

“Nope. But thanks for holding the bag.”

J.T. cocked his head. “You know I’m going to find out.”

“There’s nothing to find out.”

J.T. laughed. “Man. You’re such a liar. But whatever. Be all stoic and Sawyer-like.”

Sawyer scowled. “Did you come in here for a reason? Or did you just come in here to harass me?”

“Hmm. Well, as much as I enjoy harassing you, I came in to see if you were all right.”
