“He’s been with Lucy all day. She’s bringing him home after dinner.”

J.T. shook his head. “I find their relationship to be really weird. They fight like an old married couple.”

“They’ve known each other for fifty years. It works for them.”

After a second bowl of stew, Jake pushed his chair away from the table and stood. “That was great stew.” He smiled at Sage. “Thanks, honey.”

“I’ll tell granddad you liked it.”

“She who holds the spoon gets the credit.”

“Wow. That’s wise, Dad.”

“Well, it came from a wise woman. Noko Esty.” He glanced around the table, lingering a moment longer on Sawyer, then cleared his throat. “I’m going to go check on Ember and make sure the door got fixed today.”

Sawyer nodded. “Yeah. I saw Ray headed over there with a new doorknob. But it probably wouldn’t hurt to check.”

Jake headed for the mud room. “I won’t be late.”

Sawyer smiled as he scraped the last bite of stew from the bottom of his bowl. J.T. nudged him and raised an eyebrow and Sawyer shook his head, then nodded toward Sage.

J.T. scowled and stood up. “I suppose Sawyer and I are on dish duty.”

Sage got to her feet and took her bowl to the sink. “She who holds the spoon doesn’t have to wash it.”

Sawyer pointed at her. “Good one, Little Sis.”

“I’ll leave you guys to it.” She left the room and J.T. sat back down.

“So what the hell is going on with Dad?”

Sawyer leaned back in his chair. “Get us a couple of beers, and I’ll tell you.”

J.T. went to the refrigerator and took out two beers, then returned to the table and sat across from Sawyer. They both opened their bottles and took a sip.

“Okay. Tell me what’s going on.”

Sawyer took another drink. “It’s Dad…”

“I got that much.”

“He told me not to tell you. He wanted to do it himself. So…can we tell him you forced it out of me?”

“I’ll tell him I had you in a damn headlock. Just tell me.”

“Dad and Ember.”

J.T. raised an eyebrow. “What the hell? You’re not saying…”

“Yeah. I am. But it’s not what you think.”

J.T. took another drink. “Well, good. Because what I’m thinking is Dad and Granddad’s very young nurse are…” He took another drink.

Sawyer took a breath. “Well, actually, they are.”

“Shit.”

“But it’s not what you think.”
