“Yeah. You just said that. What is it, exactly?”

Sawyer drank some beer. “Dad got his memory back today. The lost five months aren’t lost anymore.”

J.T. leaned forward. “What? Why wouldn’t he tell us? Where was he?”

“He was in Santa Fe…with Ember.”

J.T. rubbed his face. “Um…I’m just going to sit here and keep my mouth shut and you’re going to tell me what the hell you’re talking about.”

Sawyer told J.T. what Jake relayed to him earlier in the day at Ember’s house and in the barn. J.T. stayed quiet through it all.

Sawyer shrugged. “And that’s all I know.”

“Well, shit.”

“Yeah.”

“Shit.”

“I know.”

J.T. leaned back in his chair and stared at the ceiling for a moment, then looked at Sawyer and shook his head. “He kicked the damn door in?”

Sawyer laughed. “Yeah. Apparently our dad is ah…” He blew out a breath. “Anyway. They are in love. Like seriously, let’s spend the rest of our lives together, love.”

“Shit.”

Sawyer grinned. “Yep.”

Chapter thirty-seven

"Did I miss my curfew?"

Ember was sitting next to Jake on the couch. The room was lit by the fire in the woodstove and one small lamp. She laid her head on his shoulder. It’d been a really long month. But it was over now. She had her John back. Even though she now had to call him Jake. Jake O’Connell. It was a great name, and she was glad it came back to him.

“So do you think Sawyer’s okay now?”

“Yeah. I think the hardest part for him was realizing I’m a man with wants, needs, and desires.”

“It’s hard for kids. And this is a special situation.”

“How so?”

“We’re not their parents who have been married for twenty-five years. This is new and exciting.” She laughed. “You kicked the door down.”

“Shit. Everyone else seems a lot more impressed by that than me. I just wanted to getinside.”

She kissed his neck, then sat up and took his hands. “There’s something we need to talk about.”

“Okay.”

“After you had your dream about Rachel. You said it didn’t affect you emotionally because you didn’t have the memories to go with what you dreamt about.”

“Right. I said that.”

“You also said, that once you did get your memories back and remembered what you went through, that you might—”

He put a hand on her cheek to stop her. “I have no regrets. No guilt. I will always love Rachel. She’s the mother of my children. Her memory will always be a part of our lives.” He was quiet for a moment. “She was sick for a year. And we spent a lot of that time talking. She had trouble sleeping, and I’d stay up with her and we’d talk. She made it very clear she didn’t want me to be alone for the rest of my life. I told her I wouldn’t. But at the time, I was lying to her. I never in a million years thought I’d find love again. I wasn’t looking for it. I’ve been single for ten years. During that time, I went on a couple very polite dates. And only because Genny forced me to. But when I opened my eyes and saw you standing over me, everything changed.”
