“Yeah. Ember and I are—”

Sage got to her feet and put her hands over her ears. “No. Don’t say it.”

“Honey.”

“Dad. Surely now that you remember us. AndMom.”

“It doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t change how I feel about her.”

“I don’t believe this.”

“Sage.”

She closed her eyes for a moment. “I need some time to let this all sink in.”

Jake nodded. “Okay.” He went to her and kissed her on the forehead. “I love you.”

“I love you too, Dad.”

He left the room and went to his own. Rosie laid down next to the bed and looked at him.

“Did I handle that wrong?”

He sat in the oversized chair in the corner of his room and took out his phone. Then he dialed Ember.

“Hi.”

“Hey. Well, everybody knows now.”

“How’d it go?”

“The boys are fine. Dad is more than fine. But Sage, not so much.”

“I’m sorry. I can talk to her if you think it’ll help.”

“Maybe at some point. She’s just so protective of her mother’s memory.”

“I wish I could give you a hug.”

He smiled. “I wish you could give me a whole lot more than that.” He glanced at the dresser. “When I came back last month, I solved the mystery of my wedding ring.”

“You did?”

“Yeah. It was here in my drawer where I’d left it before I took my trip. I took my wedding ring off three weeks before I met you.”

“My goodness.”

“Yeah. I think someone was trying to tell me something.”

“Maybe it was a nudge from heaven.”

He laughed. “You could be right.”

Chapter thirty-eight

"It sucks being an adult sometimes."

When Jake came downstairs for breakfast, everyone was already in the kitchen. The boys both tried to act nonchalant. Jacob winked at him and Sage avoided looking at him. She was at the stove stirring a pot of oatmeal. Oatmeal was Jake’s least favorite breakfast meal, and he couldn’t help thinking Sage made it on purpose to further prove how upset she was.
