“I can’t put this off, right?”

Rosie whined.

“Yeah. You’re right.” He knocked on the door. “Sage?”

A moment later, she opened it. “Hey.” She cocked her head. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah. Can I come in for a moment?”

“Sure. I’m trying to fix the bridge in this song. I get it right on the piano, then I try it on theguitar and it doesn’t work.” She smiled at him.

“Will it help to have someone play the guitar while you play the piano?”

“Yes. Do you have time?”

He looked at his watch. “It’s ten o’clock the only thing I’ve got waiting for me is a book.”

She picked up her guitar and handed it to him, then sat at the piano. He stood behind her so he could read the music she’d written. She pointed at the sheet of musical notes.

“Okay. Start right there.”

Jake started playing, and she came in on the piano. When they came to the bridge, she stopped halfway through it. “Right there. That’s the problem.” She looked up at him. “Did you hear it?”

“Yeah. I think if I repeat that chord, it might fix it. If I pause, then double strum the chord…” He demonstrated what he meant.

She clapped her hands. “Yes. That’s it. So simple. Why didn’t I think of that?”

“Sometimes you just need a new set of ears on it.” They played it through two more times to make sure it sounded right, then she jotted down some notes.

She turned on the piano bench. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” He leaned the guitar against the wall.

“But you didn’t come in here to help me with my song. What’s up, Dad?”

He sat on the edge of the bed. “I got mymemory back today. I know where I was for those five months and why I dropped out of sight.”

She got up and hugged him. “Oh my gosh. Why didn’t you say something at dinner?”

He patted her back. “Go sit down.” She returned to her seat, and he sighed. “I was in Santa Fe, with amnesia. I had no memory of any of you or my life.”

“So, you were there all alone with no idea who you were?”

“No. I wasn’t alone. I was with Ember. She helped me. Stayed with me.”

“Ember? Is that why she’s here?”

“Yes. Genny tracked her down. And she came here hoping when I saw her I’d remember. But I didn’t. Not until today.”

“So she and Aunt Genny knew where you were and didn’t say anything?”

“Dr. Curtis advised them not to.”

Sage took a moment to let the information he’d told her sink in. “So you and Ember are friends, then?”

“We started out that way, yes. But then it changed into something more.”

“More?”
