She smiled. “Whispers can turn into shouts.”

“You think so?”

“I have no idea. But it seems like it’s a step in the right direction.”

“Maybe. I wish I could explain to you what it feels like. But it’s beyond putting into words. It’s just damn strange and confusing.”

“And a bit scary, I imagine.”

He sighed. “More than a bit. Or it would be if a crazy, determined nurse hadn’t appear before my eyes and become my guardian angel. You were my first new memory.” He saw tears in her eyes and he reached for her hand. “That’s not a bad thing.”

“I know. These are happy tears.”

“Are you sure?”

She swiped at one with her free hand. “Yes.”

Scott called from across the porch. “I think these steaks are about done. Does medium rare sound about right to you, John?”

He let go of Ember’s hand and looked at Scott. “Your guess is as good as mine. Medium rare sounds fine.”

John and Ember joined Scott at the barbeque. He put three steaks on a plate and they went inside to eat. The table was set, and Ember went to the stove to get the beans that were heating. She poured them into a serving bowl and brought them, along with a salad, to the table.

John looked at the food. “It all looks great.Thank you.”

Ember patted Scott’s shoulder. “Despite ignoring my suggestions, he did pretty good.”

Scott cut into his steak. “I thought we could go out on the boat tomorrow and do some fishing.”

John nodded. “Yeah. Surely I don’t have a problem with fishing.”

Scott looked at Ember. “Maybe you could run into town and pick up a few things while us guys are fishing.”

John glanced at Ember. Scott wanted to have some one-on-one time with him to feel him out a little more. Which was fine. He understood that.

Ember nodded. “Yeah. I’ll get some groceries and whatever you need, John.”

“Thank you.”

Scott spent the rest of the meal talking about how good the fishing was on the lake. Then gave John a brief history of the area. When they were done eating, Scott leaned back and patted his stomach.

“Wow. That was good. What’d you think, John?”

“It was great. Thank you.”

“Frank, down the way, made me a couple of flies. I think I’ll go pick them up while Ember cleans this mess up.”

She shook her head. “Really?”

“Hey. I cooked.”

“Fine. But tomorrow, you’re washing dishesno matter who cooks.”

He nodded and got to his feet. “I won’t be long.” He put on a jacket and went through the door.

Ember stood and picked up her plate and Scott’s. When she reached for John’s, he got to his feet and took his plate. “I’ll help. It’s the least I can do.”

“Thank you. I’m not even going to try to pretend to talk you out of it. Help with the dishes is always welcome.”
