They cleared the table, then Ember ran some water in the sink. While she waited for it to fill, she looked at John. “I’m sorry about Scott’s not-so-subtle ploy to get you alone tomorrow.”

John grinned. “It’s fine. I get it.”

“He just doesn’t know you yet, like I know you.”

“You don’t know me, Ember.”

She patted his arm. “I think I do.”

“Your sink is full.”

She turned off the water. “Do you want to wash? Or rinse and dry?”

“Rinse and dry. It’s my specialty.”

“Really?”

He shrugged. “It could be.”

She handed him a towel. “I guess we’ll find out.”

“How hard can it be?”

Halfway through the dishes, Ember smiled at him. “Seems you’ve done this before, John.”

“I am pretty good at it.” He laughed.

She pointed at him. “That’s what you did. You were a dishwasher.”

“Nah. I don’t think so. It doesn’t feel right.”

John was suddenly hit with a piercing pain above his left eye and he dropped the glass he was drying and grabbed his head.

“Oh my God. What is it?” Ember put her arm around his waist and helped him to the table. “Sit.” She knelt next to him. “What can I do?”

He took her hand. “Shit.” He tried to breathe through the pain. When it started subsiding, he squinted at her. “Dammit. What the hell was that?”

“What did it feel like?”

He closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead. “It felt like a bolt of lightning struck me.” He rubbed the spot above his eyes. “But during it all, I saw something.”

“A memory?”

“I don’t know. A woman’s face.”

“Do you remember who she is?”

He shook his head. “She was older. Like maybe my grandmother? I don’t know.”

“I should take you to the clinic.”

“No. It’s completely gone now. I feel fine.”

“That doesn’t mean you’re fine.”

He was still holding her hand, and he squeezed it. “Ember. I’m fine.”

She stood and pointed at him. “Stay there. I want to check your blood pressure.”
