“You’re buying more cows?”

“Yeah. Now that we have another eight or so thousand acres of prime grassland, or will soon,we can expand the herd. Which brings me to a question. I’ve been under the assumption you’d settle right in here with me and the family. But are you okay being so far away from yours?”

“Yes. I am. I’d go live on the moon with you. I’ll miss them, of course. But I can go see them. Or they can come see me.”

“Okay. I just want to make sure.”

“We kind of assumed you were from a ranch. Not necessarily the owner of one, but still. Once I saw you on Sugar, I figured I might be leaving Santa Fe at some point if you got your memory back. And as wonderful as our time was in Schaeffer Mills, I did want you to get your memory back.”

He took another drink of coffee. “I still can’t believe I forgot you.”

“Temporarily. I’m here now. You remember both your life here and your life with me. It’s all good.”

Bess, the waitress, came to the table and smiled at them. “Are we going for the special today?”

Jake looked at her. “What is it again? I seemed to have lost track of the days.”

“Meatloaf and a twice baked potato.”

“Hmm. I think I’ll have a ranch burger with fries.”

“Good deal.” She looked at Ember. “How about you, hon?”

“What’s on the ranch burger?”

“Bacon, barbecue sauce, grilled onions, and lettuce.”

“Yum. Can I get fresh onions instead of grilled?”

“Sure thing.”

She left the table and Jake looked at Ember. “One more thing to talk about.”

“Okay.”

“I told the kids you’d be eating dinner with us from now on.”

“I’d like that.”

“And at some point, I’d like to get you moved into the house. I’m just not quite sure how to do that. Are you okay staying where you’re at for a little while longer?”

“Of course. As long as you come stay with me once in a while.”

“Honey. It’ll be a whole lot more often than once in a while.”

“Good.” She thought for a moment. “Maybe I shouldn’t move in officially until we get married.”

He leaned back in his chair. “That only works if we get married sooner rather than later.”

She smiled. “I’m fine with that.”

“How soon? We can go to the court house right now if you want.”

Ember laughed. “As great as that sounds. I think I’d like a more traditional wedding. Is that okay with you?”

“Of course. Whatever you want.”

She fussed with the napkin on her lap. “I want you to be comfortable. And if it’s easier on you to—”
