“Ember.” He took her hand. “I want you to have the wedding you want. Whether that’s family only, or the whole damn town. I’m fine.”

“Okay. Somewhere in between those two things.”

He nodded. “You haven’t answered the how soon question.”

“In the spring?”

Jake sighed. “How about in February?”

“Why February?”

“No reason. It’s just sooner than spring.”

She laughed. “February it is. But not on the fourteenth. That’s a little too cliché.”

“Agreed. How about on the second?”

“Groundhog day?”

“Yes. Every year, we can poke our heads out of the bedroom to see if it’s sunny. If it is, then we get to spend another six weeks in bed.”

“That sounds like a perfect day to have an anniversary on.”

Chapter thirty-nine

"Make that five trees."

Ember rolled over and snuggled into Jake's neck, then she threw an arm over his chest and kissed him. He untangled himself from her and sat up.

“Time to get up.”

“Jake. We vowed to not become one of those couples.”

He stood and smiled at her. “One of what couples?”

“Where sex becomes a routine, once a week, whatever.”

He laughed and bent to kiss her. “Darling, believe me. We won’t ever become a whatever couple. But today is the fifteenth.”

She raised a questioning eyebrow.

“It’s Christmas tree day.”

She thought for a moment. “And the day you said you wanted your father back on a horse.”

“Exactly.”

“So does getting the Christmas tree involve riding a horse?”

“Yes.” He took her hand and pulled her to a sitting position. “We ride out as a family and find the perfect tree for us and Genny, then wrap them in a tarp and drag them back. It’s tradition.”

“Okay. That sounds fun.” She wrinkled her brow. “I’m invited, right?”

“Of course you’re invited. You’re family.”

“Can I shower first?”

“Yes.” He pulled her out of bed.
