“You can do that here?”

“Yes. Scott has a cuff here for when my grandparents visit. They both have high blood pressure.”

She left the kitchen and John rubbed his temple again. It didn’t hurt anymore, but the memory of it was still with him. He tried to bring back the woman’s face, but he couldn’t.

Ember returned with the blood pressure cuff and put it on his wrist, then turned it on. She took note of the reading, then had him stand and she took it again.

When she removed the cuff and had him sit back down, he smiled at her. “What’s the verdict, Doc?”

“It’s perfect. Nice and low.”

“That’s good, right?”

“Yes.”

He touched her forehead. “Then get that frown off your face.”

She smiled, then hugged him. “You scared the crap out of me.”

John laughed. “I scared the crap out of myself, too.”

She sat down and reached for his hand. “Just sit here for a moment and make sure it doesn’t come back.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Scott came into the kitchen and saw the broken glass and the towel on the floor. Then looked at John and Ember at the table.

Ember let go of John’s hand. “He just had a weird pain experience.”

“What the hell does that mean?”

John waved a hand. “I’m fine. It was a memory flash that really, really hurt for a minute. But I’m good now.”

“You remembered something?”

“I saw a face when the lightning bolt hit me. I don’t know who it was, though.”

“Maybe you should go to the clinic.”

Ember got to her feet. “I tried to tell him that.”

John shook his head. “I’m fine. Really.” He looked at the broken glass. “Sorry about your glass.”

Ember bent to pick up the pieces and Scott went to help her. “Careful, Sis.”

John straightened in his chair. Scott calling Ember sis, seemed significant somehow.

She looked at him. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah. It’s totally gone.”

She dropped the glass into the trash can, then looked at Scott. “Did you get your flies?”

“Yes. And they’re beauties.”

John stood, still feeling a little strange. “So we’re fly-fishing tomorrow?”

“I’ll bring a regular fishing pole, too. You can try either, or both. Or neither one. Whatever you feel like once we’re out on the water. You might just want to sit. It’s fine.”
