He wiped a tear from her cheek. “I didn’t mean to make you cry.”

“It was bound to happen.”

The pastor cleared his throat and Jake looked at him. “Sorry. Carry on.” He stepped back and took Ember’s hands again.

The ceremony was short and to the point and it seemed they got to the vows in record time. But on the other hand, it seemed like time was standing still and there were just the two of them. Jake couldn’t take his eyes off of hers and he remembered the first time he saw those whiskey colored eyes leaning over him, filled with concern and compassion.

When he heard, “Jake, will you recite your vows to Ember?” he nodded, then smiled at her and took a breath. It’d taken him a while to come up with just the right words. And even now ashe was about to say them, he worried it wasn’t enough to convey to her how he felt.

“When I lost myself, you were my first new memory. My new life started the moment I saw your face. You truly were my guardian angel and a light leading me out of a dark tunnel. Then everything came back to me and I lost you. But you were still there, doing your guardian angel thing. You healed my mind. And you healed my heart. You gave me a new beginning. A new story we’re going to write together. And it’s going to be great. I can’t wait to see where it goes. I love you Ember. Thank you for falling in love with me and agreeing to be my wife.” Ember’s eyes filled with tears, and he wiped away one sliding down her cheek. “Don’t cry, my love.”

She shook her head and tried to breathe.

The pastor nodded at her. “Ember.”

She smiled. “Jake. I still have trouble calling you that sometimes. Because you’ll always be my John Sherlock, the man with no past, who was willing to have a future with me. We both had doubts and fears. A million questions. But we shared them and found out they were the same. And the only thing that really mattered was our love. I would’ve loved to have married John Sherlock. But I love even more that I’m marrying Jake O’Connell. Because Jake comes with this beautiful family, who I love dearly. And I thank them for inviting me into the family fold. Thank you, Jake, for making me part of your family. Andthank you for loving me and asking me to be your wife.”

At the pastor’s direction, Jake slid the diamond encrusted band on Ember’s finger. She then slid a gold band onto his. They were married, and it was time to kiss the bride. Jake did so with a lot of enthusiasm drawing whistles and cheers from their guests. They then headed down the aisle as Mr. and Mrs. Jake O’Connell.

Chapter forty-four

"The time for buts has passed."

Sawyer came up beside Sage while she watched Jake and Ember dancing. She glanced at him, then nudged him. “I have to admit, you and J.T. look pretty good today.”

He grinned. “Are you fishing for a compliment?”

“No. But it wouldn’t kill you to give me one.”

Sawyer took a step back and looked her up and down. “Fine. You look pretty good.” He followed her gaze to their father. “Do you finally see it?”

She sighed. “Yes. They’re really in love.”

“It took you long enough to come around.”

She watched her father laugh at something Ember said. “Do you suppose they’ll have kids?”

“I guarantee it.”

She looked at Sawyer. “Did he tell you that?”

“Pretty much, yeah.”

Sage looked at Jake and Ember again. “I guess that’d be kind of cool. Of course she’d want tohave kids. She’s young. And Dad’s notthatold.”

“Apparently not.”

Sage nudged him again. “Stop. I’m trying not to think about that part of it. Just let me pretend that babies are delivered by the stork.”

“Not too many storks up here in rural Montana.”

“They don’t live here. They just deliver babies here.”

“Right. How old are you again?”

“Shush.” When she spotted a man walking toward them, who Sawyer didn’t recognize, she turned toward him.

“Dammit.”
