They went to the porch to watch the sun drop down behind the trees as they had so many times before. Then Jake turned to Ember.

“Long day. But we’re finally here.”

She put her arms around him and kissed him. “How many times have we kissed on this porch?”

“Countless.” He picked her up and cradled her in his arms.

She laughed. “You’re not going to kick the door down, are you?”

He set her down for a moment and dug the key out of his pocket. “I didn’t think this through.” He unlocked the door, then picked her up again. They went inside and he carried her to the kitchen and set her on the counter.

She smiled at him. “This is where it all began.”

He moved between her knees and put his hands on her face. “It began long before. But that night is when it got interesting.”

“I’m not sure Scott would appreciate us…beginning our honeymoon on his kitchen counter.”

Jake leaned in and kissed her. “He’ll never know.”

“I love you Mr. O’Connell.”

“And I you, Mrs. O’Connell.”

“Scott said it might snow this week.”

Jake kissed her. “Hmm. That’d be a bummer. We might get snowed in.”

“You don’t sound all that upset about the prospect. Don’t you have a ranch to run?”

“The kids managed to keep the place up and running for five months while I was gone. I’m not worried about it at all. I hope there’s a damn blizzard. The storm of the century.”

“We could be here until spring.”

“Maybe early summer, even.”

“Mr. O’Connell?”

“John. Call me John. While we’re here, I want to be that lucky son of a bitch, John Sherlock who met his guardian angel in a hospital room seven and a half months ago.”

“I love you, John.”
