“Of course they are.”

“They have to have a bit of a problem withthe age thing. How old is your mother?”

“She’s Forty-eight.”

“Shit.”

Ember patted his back. “It’s okay. They just want me to be happy. And they can tell you make me happy.”

“I know this is really hypocritical of me. But if some forty-year-old man wanted to marry Sage, I think I’d have a problem with it.”

“Maybe at first. But you’d come around.”

“Hmm.”

“We should ask them to dance.”

“Who?”

“My parents.” She stopped dancing and took his hand. “Come on.”

Jake blew out a breath, then walked beside her to Eileen and Dale. They both smiled, which was a good sign.

Ember took her father’s hand. “Will you dance with me, Dad?”

“Of course.”

They headed for the dance floor and Jake looked at Eileen, then held out his hand. “Would you like to join them?”

“Yes, Jake. Thank you.”

They went to the dance floor and Jake assumed a polite dance hold with Eileen. “I ah… I know you must have some reservations about all this. We haven’t really had time to sit down with you and Dale and talk about it.”

“I did. Jake. Still do, I guess. But it’s obviousyou love her and she loves you.”

“We do.”

“Then that’s all that really matters.”

“Okay. But…”

“No buts. This is your wedding day. The time for buts has passed.”

“I suppose it has.”

“I do have one question for you.”

“Okay.”

“Even as a little girl, Ember talked about having a family someday. Is she going to have to give up that dream. It would be understandable that you might not be willing to start over again in the child-rearing department.”

Jake smiled. “Eileen, God willing, you’ll get your chance to be a grandmother again.”

She nodded. “Thank you, Jake. That makes me very happy.”

Jake and Ember spent their wedding night in Noko and Misho’s house, then left the next morning for New Mexico. The wind and rain from the last few days had turned to snow so the drive to the airport was a bit precarious. They caught a plane in Billings and were in Santa Fe four hours later, where the weather was in the mid-sixties and the sun was shining. They ate lunch at the burger place outside of town, where they’d eaten the day Jake was released from the hospital. Then they drove to Schaeffer Mills.

They arrived at the cabin just as the sun was going down. It’d only been three months since Jake was there, but it seemed like he’d been gone much longer. It was a welcome sight and he was glad it was where Ember wanted to spend their honeymoon.
