“Yes. And it’s been a good investment for him as well. It’s almost doubled in value since he bought it.”

“It seems the Madisons are lucky.”

“Speaking of being lucky. How do you feel about Rummy?”

“Rummy?”

“The card game?”

He smiled. “I know what it is. Are you asking how I feel about it? Or are you asking me to play with you?”

“A positive response to the latter would infer a positive answer to the former.”

He rubbed his face. “Yes.”

“Yes, what?”

“Yes, I’ll play Rummy with you.”

She smiled. “Cool. As soon as we finish the dishes.”

An hour later, they were sitting at the tablewith a bag of chips and a deck of cards. Ember shuffled and dealt them out. “When you play can you draw from the discard pile instead of the draw pile if you want?” He raised an eyebrow, and she said, “Oh, right. Let’s go with that. Do you…remember how to play?”

“Yes. Three of a kind or a run of the same suit.”

“Perfect. You go first.”

John drew a card from the draw pile, then looked at Ember. “This smart ex-boyfriend of yours. Where is he now?”

She shrugged. “I have no idea. He took a job in Florida and I never heard from him again.”

“You didn’t want to move to Florida with him?”

She drew a card and rearranged her hand. “He didn’t ask me to.”

“Hmm.”

“What’s that mean?”

John laid down two sets of three cards. “It means the guy must not be as smart as you thought he was.”

She looked at him for a moment. “Thank you. But, had he asked, I wouldn’t have gone.”

“He wasn’t your Mr. Perfect?”

“No. He was pretty good looking. And respectful. But he was lacking in compassion and I’m not too sure about the loyalty part. He definitely wasn’t ready to settle down.”

“Well, good riddance, then.”

“That’s what I said. After I moped around for a week.”

“It only took a week to get over him?”

“Yeah.”

John laid down the rest of his cards. “Rummy.”

“Man. You’re good.”
