“Just lucky.”

They played for two hours, then went onto the porch to look at the night sky. It was chilly out and John lit the firepit. They sat by it and warmed their hands.

Ember looked at the sky. “Do you know the constellations? When you look up there, does it come back to you?”

John looked at the sky. “I know the North Star and that it’s supposed to lead you home. That’s about it, I guess. Nothing else is coming to me.”

“I always wanted to learn about them. I just never took the time to do it.”

“Well, you’re going to have to do that.”

She nodded. “I hope you find your way home, John.”

“I’m afraid it might be a long road.”

John made pancakes and sausages for breakfast and then they did the dishes together. John was washing and Ember was rinsing and setting the dishes in the dish drainer. The sink had a spray nozzle that detached from the main faucet andshe was using it to spray the soap from the dishes. When she accidentally sprayed John’s shirt, he jumped away.

“Hey.”

“Sorry. It was totally an accident. I swear.”

He sighed and returned to the sink. “Okay.”

“Really. And don’t even think about getting revenge.”

He shook his head. “I’m a mature man. I don’t play childish games like spraying people with water.”

“Ohh. Okay. My mistake.”

She picked up a towel and began drying the dishes in the rack. When she went to put a stack of plates away, John picked up the sprayer and shot her in the back with it.

She squealed and turned back to him. “I can’t believe you did that.”

“What. It was totally an accident. I swear.”

She shook her head. “A mature man, huh?”

He still had the sprayer in his hand and she put her hand over his. “Let’s put it away before someone gets really wet.”

“Like you?”

“John. Put the sprayer down.”

He looked at her for a moment, then let go of it.

She nodded, and said, “Thank you.” Then she picked it up and hosed down the front of his shirt.

He moved back away from her and looked athis shirt. “Wow. You just wait.”

She laughed. “For what?”

“Sometime, when you least expect it. I’ll get you back.” He started unbuttoning his shirt. “This is my only clean shirt.”

“I’m sorry. Do you want me to put it in the dryer?”

He left the room and came back a few minutes later in a t-shirt. He handed his wet shirt to her. “I think you get to finish the dishes by yourself.”

“I will do that as soon as I put your shirt in the dryer.” After starting the dryer, she returned to the kitchen and headed for the living room. “I saw something outside.”
