The waiter came to the table with chips and salsa, and Ember smiled at him. “Can I get a margarita? Blended with salt. And he needs ashot of tequila.”
John looked at him. “Patron, if you have it. And a dark beer. Modelo?”
“Yes, sir.”
John smiled at Ember. “Stop looking so worried. I’m fine.”
“You haven’t had any flashes for a while.”
“Well, yes and no. Every time I do anything at Everett’s place, I’m remembering. I just haven’t figured out what.”
“That’s good. It’s going to be good for you.”
John dipped a chip into the salsa. “I feel a little guilty though, leaving you home alone every afternoon.”
“I’ve kept busy. But I actually did a thing today.”
“What?”
“I went to the clinic and asked them if they could use a part-time nurse.”
John grinned. “That’s great. They said, hell yeah, right?”
She nodded. “Three days a week from noon to five.”
“Congratulations.”
“I figured I need to get me one of those job things, too.”
“Does this mean Scott’s okay with us staying at the house for a while?”
“Yes. He says to stay as long as we want. Once school starts, he doesn’t have the time to come up here. He’s happy to have the place occupiedand being taken care of.”
“Good.”
She looked at him for a moment. “So, are we staying for a while, then?”
He nodded. “I’d like to.”
“Me too.”
“I still feel like I’m keeping you from your life.”
She smiled at him. “My life was working four ten-hour shifts a week and then spending three days with my cat.”
“I’m sure there was more to it than that.”
“Not really. If I were home right now, I’d be watching Netflix and eating cereal for dinner.”
“Wow. Now I wonder who’s saving who here.”
She laughed. “I think we’re saving each other. I was in a rut. This has brought me out of it. So thank you, John Sherlock, for ending up in the hospital on my shift.”
“You’re welcome.”
The waiter returned with their drinks, and John held up his shot. “To new beginnings.”
“And…finding our way back home.”
