John drank his shot, then took a drink of beer. “Okay. I like tequila.”

She shook her head. “I don’t think anyone actually likes tequila.”

“No. I really do. And the beer is good, too.”

“Why’d you order those brands?”

“It seemed like the thing to do. They came into my head.”

“Along with your grandmother’s face?”

“Yeah. Maybe.” He took another chip. “Do I look like I could have some Native American in me? Two generations back?”

“Hard to say. It’s possible. She could also be a second wife.”

“So many possibilities. It’s a bit mind numbing.”

“It’s a puzzle. And someday, hopefully soon. The pieces will start falling into place.”

They both picked up their menus, and she looked at him over the top of hers. “Does anything jump out at you?”

“Steak fajita.”

“Mmm. I love the way they smell.”

“What are you going to have?”

“Chicken enchiladas.”

“Sounds good.” He drank some more beer. “So, the Fourth of July is Sunday?”

“Yes. Lots of fun.”

“I can’t wait.”

They ate their meals, and John talked about the horses and how each one had its own personality and quirks. Then he told her about the trail and how slow and boring it was. But the tourists loved it. And a little boy today had asked him if he was a real cowboy.

“What’d you tell him?”

“I said, hell yeah. Only I didn’t say hell because he was like ten.”

Ember laughed. “Even though I grew up inSanta Fe, I wasn’t really into the cowboy thing.”

“How about now that you’ve met a real one? Or possibly a real one.”

“I think I see the attraction. Or maybe I should say, mystique.”

He laughed. “Attraction works.”

Chapter ten

"I don't think I'm much of a shorts guy."

John was sitting on the couch reading a book when Ember came out in her yoga pants and tank top, again. She laid down her mat and looked at him.

“Okay. Let’s go.”

“Go where?”
