“Off the couch. Onto the floor. Time for some yoga.”

He looked up from his book. “I don’t think so.”

She put her hands on her hips. “John, get your ass off the couch.”

“Why? Why do I need to do yoga? I’d much rather watch you do it from the comfort of the couch.”

“It’s good for you. It’s great for relaxation. And it might clear your mind and help you remember stuff.”

He returned his attention to his book. “Nah. I’m good.”

Ember went to him and took the book away from him, then took his hand. “As your nurseand guardian angel, I insist.”

“I’m wearing jeans.”

“Do you have some track pants? Or sweats?”

“No.”

“Shorts?”

“No. You know what I have, Ember. What I showed up in the hospital in and what I’ve borrowed from Scott.”

She held up a finger. “Don’t go anywhere.”

He raised his hands. “Where would I go?”

She went into Scott’s bedroom and came out a few minutes later with a pair of cut-off sweatpants. They’d hit John at his knees.

“These will work.”

John sighed. “Why is this so important to you?”

“Will you just trust me?”

He took the shorts from her, then went to his room to change. He came out after five minutes. “I don’t think I’m much of a shorts guy.”

She smiled. “You have very nice legs, John. Nothing to be embarrassed about.”

“I’m not embarrassed. I’m just not comfortable.” He took a breath. “Alright. Let’s get this over with.”

“Wow. Way to be cooperative.”

He started laughing. “Okay. Sorry. What do we do?”

She got him down on the floor next to him and they started out with easy poses to get him used to it. He listened to her and did what shetold him to do. And after a while, he found it to be quite relaxing. He also found it to be slightly erotic. But he tried to concentrate on the relaxing part.

When they stopped after thirty minutes, they sat next to each other in the lotus position, and she told him to close his eyes.

“Now. We’re going to meditate for a few minutes. I want you to clear your mind. Make it a blank slate.”

“Umm.”

“Sorry. Poor choice of words. Just breathe with me and try not to think of anything. Breathe in through your nose. And out through your mouth.”

John followed the pattern of her breathing and tried to clear his mind. After a few minutes, he felt himself drifting into a state of relaxation he’d never reached before. At least not in his limited span of memory. They stayed that way for several minutes. When a vision floated into his head, he tried to bring it into focus. In his relaxed state, it seemed like something he could do.

The image of two children came into view. A boy and a girl, both around ten or twelve. He couldn’t tell for sure. But there was a man talking to them. And all three of them were crying. The face of the older woman replaced the other image, and he opened his eyes and gasped.
