“So, Mr. Perfect.”

She laughed. “Is that asking too much?”

“No, Ember. Hold out for your Mr. Perfect. I have a feeling you deserve him.”

She squeezed his hand. “You should try to get some sleep. You look pretty wiped out.”

“Didn’t I just wake up?”

“Yes. But you’ve been through quite a trauma.”

He looked at their clasped hands. “Will you hold my hand until I fall asleep?”

“Yes. I will.”

“Thank you.”

He closed his eyes and Ember stayed with him until his breathing slowed down and grew regular. He must be terrified, yet here he was joking with her. Smiling. He had a really nice smile.

“Whoever you are, Mr. Sherlock, you’re one tough SOB.”

She slowly let go of his hand and rested it on the bed next to him, then she looked at his chart. There was nothing on it that would help him figure out who he was or why he was at that bar. When she left the room, there was a police officer at the nurse’s station, he turned to her as she approached.

“You’re taking care of the John Doe?”

“Yes.”

“Has he come to?”

“Yes. And he has no memory of what happened.”

He glanced toward John’s door. “I should go talk to him.”

She shook her head. “Please give him some time. He just went to sleep. As of right now, he doesn’t know who he is. And he could probably use some time to process that.”

“Amnesia? Really? Do you think it’s for real?”

“Of course it’s for real. Why would someone fake that?” Ember felt herself getting annoyed by the officer's inference.

“To cover up what really happened.”

“What really happened is someone did this to him. He’s the victim. Victims don’t fake memory loss. He wants to know what happened just as badly as you do. Probably more, actually.” She didn’t know the man she’d just left, but she felt she needed to protect him. Somebody should. At the moment, he was alone in a world void of memories.

The officer sighed and took a card from his pocket. “Will you give this to him when he wakes up again? Have him call me.”

“Of course.”

The officer left and Ember looked at Sarah, the nurse behind the desk.

Sarah smiled. “Have we already grown attached to the man in room 207?”

Ember sighed. “He’s just so alone. And the officer was inferring our John is trying to hide something.”

“He could be.”

Ember shook her head. “I don’t think so. He’s certainly not faking his memory loss. I saw the fear in his eyes when he realized it.”

Sarah nodded. “You do have a pretty good sense about people. Weren’t you off a while ago?”
