“Yeah. I was just keeping John company.”

“So, he doesn’t remember anything?”

“No. Nothing.”

“How’s he taking it?”

“Really well. But Dr. Madison said it could be temporary. He’s probably holding on to that.”

Sarah patted Ember’s hand. “You should go home.”

“To my cat?”

“I’ll keep an eye on Mr. Doe.”

“Sherlock. We decided on John Sherlock.”

Sarah smiled. “Okay. I’ll put that on his chart.”

Chapter two

"Do I need to find a bridge to live under?"

When John woke up again, it took him a moment to remember he couldn’t remember. The pain in his head had subsided, but he still felt groggy and disoriented.

“I guess complete memory loss will do that to a person.”

He had no idea what time it was or how long he’d slept, but he was hungry. He looked at the drawn blinds. There was light coming through them. Did he sleep all night?

When the door opened, he hoped it was Ember, but it was Dr. Morgan and he had three other doctors with him. That could only be bad news.

The doctors spent an hour talking to him, asking him questions he couldn’t answer, and examining his head. In the end, it seemed they were at a loss for an explanation. They left him with, “There’s still hope. His memory could come back just as fast as it left.”

When the door closed behind them, John closed his eyes. “Very helpful, guys. You musthave fifty years of medical experience between the four of you. And that’s all you can come up with? Hang in there?”

When the door opened again, John was prepared to tell the doctor just what he thought about his non-diagnosis. But it wasn’t Dr. Morgan. It was Ember, and he was very happy to see her.

She walked to the end of the bed. “How’d that go?”

“They have no idea why I can’t remember anything.”

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s so frustrating. Why can I remember the days of the week, and that the sun comes up every morning? I know gas and coffee are expensive, but I don’t know what kind of car I drive or whether or not I like coffee.”

“I’ll go get you a cup.”

“What?”

“Let’s find out if you like coffee. One step at a time, right?”

He smiled. “Sure. Let’s see if I like coffee.”

“I’ll be right back.”

She returned a few minutes later with a cup of coffee, a pack of sugar, and two containers of cream. “Do you want to try it black first?”

He took the cup from her and took a sip, then frowned at the cup. “Wow, how do people drink this stuff?”
