She glanced over her shoulder at John and saw he was awake and smiling at her.

“Yeah. We watched the fireworks from the lake, then came home and played cards for a while.”

John laughed, and she put a hand over his mouth.

“Well, get up, because I’ll be there in about an hour.”

“An hour?” She looked at John again. “I thought you weren’t coming until tomorrow.”

“Changed my mind. I thought I’d spend the whole week there. And I’ve got Aaron with me and I don’t need to have him back until the weekend.”

“Nice.” John pulled her down, and she put a hand on his chest and scowled at him. “So, you’ll be here in an hour?”

“Yeah. Or so.”

“I’ll have breakfast ready. Can’t wait to see you.”

“We’ll be there soon.”

Ember ended the call and smiled at John. “You are a bad boy. Scott can’t know about this.”

“Why not?”

“Because he’s going to have all the same reservations you had. Only he would’ve voted for option A.”

“He’s going to find out. I don’t know how long I’ll be able to keep my hands off of you.”

“Well, try. I’ll tell him when the time is right.”

He rose up onto an elbow and rested his head in his hand. “Okay. He’s your brother. It’s your call.”

“Thank you.”

He ran a finger down her arm. “Just don’t take too long.”

“I won’t. This is going to be a challenge for me, too.”

He leaned forward and kissed her. “So, we have an hour?”

“He’ll be here in an hour. Which means we have thirty minutes.”

John nodded. “I perform well under pressure.”

Ember laughed. “How do you know that?”

“I guess I don’t. Let’s find out.”

It turned out, John performed quite well under pressure and forty minutes later, Ember was in the kitchen, trying to concentrate on putting something together for breakfast. She leaned on the counter and sighed, then turned and ran her hand over it when she realized it was where things had started last night.

She shook her head. “Stop thinking about it. There’ll be lots more to come once Scott leaves on Friday. Five long days from now.”

When John walked into the kitchen fresh out of the shower, all her resolve to stop thinking about it went out the window. He came to herand put his arms around her waist, then kissed her.

He smiled, then took a step back. “Thought I’d get one more kiss in before Scott gets here.”

“He’s bringing Aaron, too. Which means he trusts you. So, let’s not give him any reason not to, just yet.”

“The reader of Billy Buck?”
