“Actually, the listener of Billy Buck. He’s six. Maybe you can read it to him tonight. It might bring back more memories.”

“I’m pretty sure I could recite it to him.”

“Do that then. He’s a sweet kid. You’ll like him.”

“You say that like there are some kids I wouldn’t like. I’d be a bit of a bastard if that were true.”

“I’m sure you’re a lover of all children.” She smiled. “In a non-creepy way, of course.”

“Apparently, I loved one or more of them enough to read that stupid book to them so many times that it’s one of the few things I remember.”

“We’ve got to take what we can get. And Billy Buck’s not stupid, he’s…”

“Stupid.”

“Okay. You’re right. It was a rainy day. A cloudy, wet, and miserable day.”

“Please stop.”

“But Billy Buck didn’t mind. Billy Buck loved the rain.”

He moved back to her and kissed her.

She put her arms around his neck. “Rainy days were days of adventure.”

“I’m going to keep kissing you until you stop.”

“I know.” She pulled him in for another kiss.

Chapter fourteen

"Keep your shirt on, cowboy."

Despite John’s interference, Ember managed to get breakfast made. She had a stack of pancakes and a pan full of bacon, ready and waiting for Scott and Aaron’s arrival. She and John went to the front porch to wait for them.

John looked at her. “Do you really think Scott’s going to have a problem with this?”

She shrugged. “I really don’t know. I never know when big brother is going to show up.”

“I’d be happy to talk to him. Tell him how I feel about you.”

She smiled and moved closer to him. “And how is that, exactly?”

“I’ll tell him you’re the air I need to breathe and you create a hunger in me that will never quite be satisfied.”

She hugged him. “You can tell him the air thing. But the hunger thing, let’s keep that one to ourselves.”

“It’s true, you know. I can’t get enough ofyou.”

She moved away from him. “Stop. Or I won’t be able to keep myself from trying to satiate your hunger.”

He reached for her, then stopped when Scott’s car pulled up in front of the house. Ember stepped off the porch and Aaron got out of the car and ran to her.

“Aunt Ember!”

“Hey buddy. Man, I missed you.” She picked him up with a groan. “Whoa, when did you get so heavy?”

“I’m six and a half now.”
