“That must be it.” She kissed him, then put him down as Scott came up to them. She hugged Scott. “How was the drive?”
“A lot longer with a six-year-old asking me if we’re there yet every five minutes.” He waved at John on the porch.
John went down the steps and came to join them. He shook Scott’s hand. “Nice to see you again.”
“How are you doing? Any more painful memory flashes?”
“Not lately.”
Scott motioned toward Aaron. “This is my son, Aaron. Aaron, shake hands with Aunt Ember’s friend, John.”
Aaron went to John and shook his hand. “Hi.”
“Nice to meet you, Aaron.”
Aaron looked up at him. “Are you a cowboy?”
“Um… kind of. What gave it away?”
“You have cowboy boots.”
John looked at his boots. “That’s right, I do. I also have a cowboy hat.”
“Really?”
“Would you like to see it?”
“Yeah!” He took John’s hand and John looked at Scott and got a nod from him. Then they headed for the house.
Scott looked at Ember. “I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Aaron likes John.”
“Well, he’s a cowboy.”
“Yeah. How’d that happen again?”
“One of Everett’s horses ran off and ended up right here in the yard. John calmed it down, then got into the saddle and rode down the road like a pro. He definitely knew what he was doing. Now, he’s working part time at the horse ranch.”
“Wow. That’s crazy. I never got the cowboy vibe from him.”
She laughed. “Me either. But I do now.”
“So, it’s been good. He’s still…”
Ember took Scott’s arm. “He has continued to be a perfect gentleman. We’ve gotten quite close.”A humongous understatement.She felt she should qualify the statement. “We’re good friends.”
Scott nodded. “Okay. Good. I worry about you up here.”
“He’s working. And I start working at the clinic in a few days.”
“What?”
“Yep. With John gone every afternoon, I was going a little stir crazy.”
“Well, cool.”
They went inside and found John and Aaron in the living room. Aaron was wearing John’s hat.
Scott laughed. “Wow, dude. Looking good.”
