“Well, yeah. This shower was made for midgets. The spray hits me mid-chest.”

She turned him around and hugged him. “I’ll make sure all the soap is washed away.”

“Thank you.”

The space was much too small to do anything except shower, so after a few minutes, they got out and dried off. They got dressed, then sat at the small table and had a cup of coffee along with a jelly-filled pastry warmed up in the microwave.

Ember took a sip of coffee. “It’s my first day ofwork and I should be excited. But all I want to do it stay here with you.”

“No playing hooky on your first day at work. And you better go home to Scott and Aaron tonight.” He cut a bite from his pastry and ate it.

“Yeah. I know. When I told Scott I wasn’t coming home last night, he didn’t say anything. But I don’t want him to have to explain to Aaron where I am again tonight. He’s sort of on our side. I don’t want to push him over the edge again.”

John reached for her hand. “They’ll be gone in two days.”

“Two really long days and even longer nights. I’ll come see you tomorrow before work.”

John sat up straight in his chair. “Damn. I almost forgot. When I got Aaron’s hat, I got you something too.”

“A cowboy hat?”

“No.” He laughed. “But that would’ve been cool.” He got up and went to the small dresser, then returned to the table with a book in his hand. “I got you this.”

She looked at the book, then at him. “It’s a book about constellations?”

“Yes. I thought we could spend some time on the front porch looking at the stars together.”

She stood and hugged him. He pulled her down onto his lap. “Does this mean you like the idea?”

“I love it.”

He pulled her close and whispered into herear. “How much do you love it?”

She laughed. “I’ll show you another time. Right now, you need to drive me back to the house and my car.”

He sighed loudly. “Okay. But don’t go checking out the stars without me.”

“I won’t.” She kissed him, then stood. “Now, come on. I need to get back so I can change and eat something a little more nutritious before I go to work.”

“These have strawberry filling.”

“It’s strawberry flavored sugar.”

He shrugged, then reached for her hands. “I want to talk to you about last night. About my dream. Can you give me a couple more minutes?”

“Of course.” She sat back down on his lap and put an arm around his neck. “I’m so sorry you lost your wife, John.”

“Like I said, it didn’t hit me emotionally since I have no memory of her or of our life together. But I’m sure once everything comes back to me, it will.” He shook his head. “I don’t want you to worry about me changing my mind about you. If I go through something. Guilt. Or depression. It won’t change how I feel about you. You just might have to give me some room to deal with it.”

“I know. I’m not worried. And whatever emotions return with your memory, we’ll work through it together. Or I’ll leave you alone. Whatever you need me to do.”

He kissed her forehead. “I know I’ve only known you for a few weeks. But I’m in this for the long haul. Whether my memory comes back or not.”

“Me too.”

He put a hand on her cheek. “Even if I have kids almost your age?”

“Even so.”
