He looked at their clasped hands for a moment. “I guess there’s something else we should talk about while we’re being all serious and adult-like.”

“What’s that?”

“Kids.”

She shook her head. “John. We don’t—”

“Let me finish.” He smiled at her. “I had a blast with Aaron yesterday. And I know spending an hour with a kid is not the same as raising one. But when the time comes to have that conversation. I’ll be onboard with whatever you want to do.”

Ember hugged him, then kissed him. “I love you John Sherlock.”

“I love you, too. But if we find out I’m a really well-preserved sixty, then we might have to re-think this conversation.”

John dropped Ember off at the house and Scott came onto the porch when he heard the truck. She went up the steps.

“I know.”

He shook his head. “I’ve got nothing to say.”

“Well, I do. John had a very vivid dream last night about…his wife.”

“Em?”

“She died, Scott. As far as he could tell, some time ago. He’s not married. He’s a widower, and he raised at least three kids through their teenaged years. He’s a good man. And I love him.”

He hugged her. “I’m happy for you, Em. I really am.”

“Thank you.” She looked at him. “Do you think his kids will resent me?”

He put an arm around her shoulder and opened the front door. “Don’t go worrying about things that may or may not happen. Just deal with one problem at a time. Getting John’s memory back.”

“Right. Just a small hurdle to get over.”

“He may never get there.”

She nodded. “I know. And that’s okay.”

They stopped inside the door and he looked at her for a moment. “In some ways, it might be easier.”

“For me, maybe. But I’d hate for him to spend the rest of his life not knowing.”

“Yeah.” He frowned. “Oh man. I just thought of something. Am I going to be an uncle to three people only a few years younger than me?”

Ember laughed. “Possibly.”

“That sucks, man. How can I be the fun uncleto twenty-somethings?”

“You can take them out drinking.”

“Hmm. Okay. That might work.”

Ember’s first day at the clinic was fun, and it was nice to be working again. But she was glad it was part time. And she spent most of the afternoon thinking about John and the conversation they had that morning. He wanted a future with her, no matter what happened with his memory. But the most heartwarming thing he said was about his willingness to have a family with her. It was something she’d thought about. And she’d always wanted to have a family. But she’d prepared herself for the possibility of John not wanting to start over again with a new family. She would’ve understood and been fine with that. But he said he’d be onboard with whatever she wanted. How wonderful was that?

She didn’t want to get ahead of herself, though. Their relationship was still very new. And even though he swore things wouldn’t change if he got his memory back, it was something neither of them could really predict. She’d be patient. And let things unfold. There was no reason to rush into anything.

Ember wanted to stop by and see John on her way home, but she didn’t. She knew if she did, she’d want to stay. And she had to spend the evening with Scott and Aaron. So she drove on byand went to Scott’s house.

He seemed surprised to see her. “I wasn’t sure if you’d make it home or not.”
