He smiled at her. “Who doesn’t like pancakes?” He poured some syrup over them and took a bite. “Apparently, I’m a fan of all breakfastfoods. But if I eat all of this, I’ll probably explode. Grab a fork and help me.”

She picked up a piece of bacon. “So, while I was waiting for this, I got an idea.”

“Does it involve some miracle to get me back my memory? Hypnosis? Shock therapy?”

“No. I’m sorry. I wish it did. It involves giving you someplace to stay while you work on getting your memory back. Because you are going to get it back.”

John set down his fork. “It never occurred to me that I have nowhere to go once they kick me out of here. I’m homeless. Do I need to find a bridge to live under?”

“No. You don’t. I called my brother, Scott. He has a place in the country. It’s about two hours north of here. He doesn’t live there full time, but he’s there right now. He says you’re welcome to come stay as long as you need to and figure out your next move.”

“Ember. You’re too kind and way too trusting. You don’t know me. I could be Jack the Ripper.”

She smiled. “You’re not nearly old enough to be Jack the Ripper. You’d be a hundred and fifty years old.”

John laughed. “You know what I mean.”

She picked up another piece of bacon. “I have a sense about you. You pose no danger.”

“Hmm. You may see another side of me if you eat that last piece of bacon.”

She ripped the piece she was eating in half and returned part of it to the plate. “Sorry. I really like bacon.” She smiled. “And apparently, so do you.”

John nodded. “So, coffee, no. Bacon, yes. I’ll need to start a list.”

“What do you say? I can drive you to Schaeffer Mills as soon as they discharge you.”

“Shit. I don’t have transportation. I don’t have ID. I’m literally a non-person.”

She smiled. “But you have a very fancy pair of expensive boots.”

“I could sell them and buy a not-so-fancy pair of boots. How soon are they going to kick me out of here?”

“I’m pretty sure it’s going to be tomorrow morning. Physically, you’ve recovered enough.”

“They’re going to send me out into the world with nothing?”

“No. If you had nowhere to go, they’d bring in social services and find you someplace to stay for a while.”

“That doesn’t sound fun.

“Which brings us back to my brother’s place.”

“Schaeffer Mills, huh? I guess I don’t have a lot of options. Thank you, Ember. You’re a lifesaver.”

“Well, I am a nurse. So, it kind of comes with the job.”

He shook his head. “No. This is way above and beyond your job description. The onlydownside is what am I going to do without my guardian angel? You’re going to be two hours away.”

She grinned. “Well, I have some time off coming. Quite a bit, actually. I never use my sick days or vacation time. I’d love to keep an eye on you for a little while, if that’s okay.”

John reached for her hand. “Ember. That’s more than okay. This puppy isn’t quite ready to navigate the world on his own.”

“Awesome. We’ll leave tomorrow.”

He squeezed her hand. “Are you one hundred percent sure about this?”

“I’m one hundred and fifty percent sure.”
