“Okay. Schaeffer Mills, here we come. I just hope I don’t turn out to be a criminal or a politician.”

“I’m pretty sure you’re safe on both accounts.”

Chapter three

"There's a cowboy vibe?"

John signed the discharge papers at eleven and changed into the only clothes he had. He thought it was interesting that they were just fine with him sighing himself out with a fake name and no personal information.

As he sat on the side of the bed to wait for Ember, he lifted a foot and looked at his boots. They were very nice boots.

“What are you doing wearing five hundred dollar boots?”

Ember came into the room and had apparently heard what he’d said. “The fact you know how much they cost is interesting.”

“I suppose.”

She smiled at him. “All ready to go?”

He stood and now that he was more lucid, he realized she was quite a bit shorter than him.

She looked up at him. “What?”

“You’re a shrimp.”

“Be nice. I’m your ride. Besides, I think it’s the boots.”

“I don’t suppose we could drive by arestaurant on the way out of town?”

“I think we can manage that. What are you hungry for?”

He laughed. “I have no idea. Maybe a burger? Or pizza? Those are normal foods people eat, right?”

“Yes. There’s a great burger place a few miles out.” She took his arm. “Let’s get you out of here.”

He stopped at the door and patted his pockets, then looked back at the room. “I feel like I’m forgetting something. Or lost something.”

“We can take a minute.”

He held up a finger. “Oh right, it’s my marbles.”

“That’s not funny, John.”

They headed down the hallway. “Wouldn’t it be weird if my name really was John?”

Ember pushed the down button for the elevator and they waited for it to arrive. When the doors opened, the officer Ember met yesterday was inside.

She smiled. “Oh, hello.”

He stepped off the elevator and looked at John. “You’ve been discharged?”

John nodded. “Yes. Heading out.”

“Well, I’m glad I caught you. I’m Officer Jordan. I was coming to tell you we checked your prints against the nationwide database and came up with nothing.”

“So, does that mean I’m not a criminal?”

“Yes. Or you’re a really good criminal whohasn’t gotten caught yet.” John scowled and Officer Jordan laughed. “Sorry. Most likely, you’re not a criminal. You’ve also never applied for public assistance or had a background check.”
