Dunny and Pete came off the porch to greet them as Jake pulled into the clearing in front of Genny’s house.

Jake glanced at her. “Are you coming for dinner?”

“No. I need to get these geese settled into their new home.”

“Okay.” Jake got out of the truck and said hi to the dogs before unloading the crate with the two geese in it. The male wasn’t too happy and kept hissing at him through the wire. “Chill out, buddy. You’re almost home.”

Genny took the crate with the six chickens. “Follow me. I’ll show you where to put Mr. and Mrs. Goose.”

They took them to a small pen next to a large one which housed three more pairs of geese. Jake set the crate down near the gate, then opened the small door before exiting the pen. He closed the gate.

“I don’t think Mr. Goose is very happy.”

Genny watched the pair as they slowlyemerged from the crate. “They’ll be fine.”

Jake sighed. “Okay. I best get home.”

“Thank you for coming with me.”

“I’ll be expecting that pie tomorrow.”

She smiled. “I’ll bring it by.” She hugged him. “If you need to talk. You know where to find me.”

He kissed her on the forehead. “Yes. I do. And for the record. You were definitely flirting with Brady Miller.”

Chapter twenty-four

"I'm almost afraid to ask how that went."

Jake was sitting on the porch with his feet on the railing. Rosie was lying under the chair and the other dogs were nearby. Two on the porch and two out running around somewhere. They stayed close and Jake never had to worry about them wandering off too far. Since he’d been back, they’d stayed even closer. It seemed they were all afraid he might disappear again.

He studied his boots. Whatever he’d been up to for five months, he’d put some wear and tear on them. When he bought them, he intended to save them for non-working situations. He’d had another pair with him on his trip. But that didn’t happen. He’d woken up in Santa Fe with them and they were now officially work boots. But that was okay. They were comfortable.

Genny drove up in her SUV and got out with a pie in her hand. As she came up the steps, Jake smiled at her.

“Where’s the other one?”

“Never you mind.”

He laughed. “I hope Brady enjoys it.”

She scowled at him. “I can take this one right back home.”

“No. Sorry. Can you heat me up a slice?”

She sighed. “Sure.” She headed for the door.

“And a beer to go with it?”

“Jake O’Connell you’ve about gotten to the end of my feeling sorry for you.”

“Well then. Just do it because you love me.”

She went into the house without further comment.

When Genny came back out she had a beer and a piece of pie in her hands. She handed both things to Jake. Then noted he was still contemplating his boots.

“Are you hoping your boots will tell you where you’ve been?”
