“I put some mileage on them for sure.”

She sat in a chair next to him and patted his arm. “It’ll come back, Jake.”

He raised an eyebrow, then took a sip of beer. “It either will or it won’t. And I’ll learn to live with it, either way.”

“Can we talk about Dad for a minute?”

“Of course. He doesn’t seem to be making much progress.”

“I know. He’s so stubborn.” She glanced at Jake. “I was thinking we should hire someone.”

“To do what?” He set the beer on the deck next to his chair and took a bite of the blackberrypie.

“Help with Dad.”

Jake looked at her. “We take care of our own, Genny.”

“I know. And of course, I get that. But this is about Dad getting back his life. This sitting around hasn’t been good for him. It’s taking a toll.”

“Yeah. So, what are we talking? A therapist? A nurse? What?”

“A private nurse who will make sure he’s eating and exercising. Someone to take him to physical therapy, and be in charge of his meds. You and the boys, and Sage. You’re doing your best. And I get over here when I can. But none of us have the time to give him all our attention. And I think that’s what he needs. Someone to take charge and not take no for an answer.”

Jake took a long sip of beer while he contemplated what she’d said, then nodded. “You’re right.”

Genny smiled. “Wow. I’m surprised you admitted that.”

“You have your moments. But, the hard part will be convincing Dad he needs a private nurse.”

“That’s why we’re not going to give him an option.”

“Hmm. Good luck with that.” He set his beer down again and took another bite of pie. “Where are you going to find a qualified nurse willing to come to Castle Springs to look after our grumpyfather?”

“Actually, I already have one lined up.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes. I thought that might be a problem. So Dr. Curtis helped me find the perfect candidate.”

“When’s this all happening?”

“She’ll be here on Monday.”

“And when are we going to tell Dad?”

“On Monday.”

Jake laughed. “You’re pretty confident this is all going to work out.”

“Yes. I am.”

He took another bite of pie. “And where is this nurse going to stay?”

She took a moment to answer him. “I was thinking of Grandma and Grandpa’s place.”

He put his feet on the deck and turned in his seat toward her. “Are you crazy?”

“Jake. I know what the house means to all of us. But it’s been sitting empty for twenty-two years. It’s about time to open it up and let someone live there again.”
