Jake laughed. “You’re off-duty tonight, Ember. Have a beer if you want. You’ll need it with this stew.”

She smiled. “Okay. Sure. A beer sounds good.”

Sage filled five bowls with stew and brought them to the table while Jake set a salad in the middle of it along with a loaf of bread on a cutting board.

He sat at the head of the table, while J.T. sat next to Ember and Sage and Sawyer sat across from them. Jake picked up his beer. “Welcome, Ember.”

“Thank you.”

Sage was the only one not drinking beer, but she raised her bottle of Coke. “I think you’re just what Granddad needs.”

“I hope so.”

Jake took a drink, then set his bottle down. “Speaking of Jacob. He usually does the cooking. So, the sooner you can get him up and about and back in the kitchen, the better.”

“So you don’t normally cook?”

“Breakfast. I cook a hell of a breakfast.”

“Let me guess. Omelets?”

He laughed. “How’d you know that?”

“Just a lucky guess.” She took a bite of stew. Sage was right. It was exceptionally spicy. “Phew. Wow. I’ve never had stew like this before.”

Jake laughed. “Like I said. Dad’s the cook around here.”

Ember looked at Sawyer, J.T., and Sage. “So, who’s the oldest here?”

J.T. raised his hand. “That would be me. Age twenty-four. The third and last Jacob Thomas O’Connell.”

Sawyer laughed. “He’d pass the name on to his kid, but he wouldn’t know what to call him.” He looked at Ember. “And I’m next. Almost twenty-three.”

Sage nudged him. “By three minutes. He loves claiming he’s my older brother.”

“You are my little sis. In more ways than one.”

Ember smiled. “So you’re twins.” She lookedat Jake. “And Genny told me you and she are twins.”

“Yes. And my grandfather on my mother’s side was a twin. Or so I’ve been told. I never met the man.”

“Oh. I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine. It was for the best.”

“So you had three kids in…”

“Fifteen months.”

“Goodness.”

“Yeah. Thankfully, we had family to help.”

Sage looked at her. “What about you? Do you have a family?”

“Yes. I have a brother.” She glanced at Jake. “And a nephew. And of course, my parents.”

“Well, including granddad and Aunt Genny, this is the extent of the O’Connell family.”
