“And a very lovely family it is.”

Sawyer took a sip of his beer. “Do you ride, Ember?”

“I recently started riding a little.”

“Well, we’ve got twenty thousand acres of the best horseback riding country in Montana.”

Jake nodded. “You’re welcome to use a horse whenever you feel like it. We’ll introduce you to the horses and set you up with one.”

“Thank you. I appreciate it.”

When everyone was finished eating, Jake pushed away from the table. “I hate to leave you two alone unsupervised, but Sawyer and Sage, it’s your turn to do the dishes.”

He stood and went to the stove. “I’ll take a bowl of this into Dad. Hopefully, he won’t chuck it at me.”

Ember got up and went to stand beside him, but she stopped a foot away. “Can I take it? He probably won’t chuck it at me.”

Jake smiled and held out the bowl. “Sure.”

When she took it, their fingers touched, and she felt a spark of electricity run up her arm. Did he feel it too? He must have felt it. She ventured a look at him, but he gave no indication he’d felt anything.

He nodded. “Thank you.”

“Of course.”

Sage handed her a slice of bread. “He’ll want this too.”

J.T. smiled. “He’ll want a beer too, but the doctor said beer and his meds don’t mix.”

“Will he drink a Coke?”

Jake filled a glass with water and dropped a few ice cubes in it. “This will do.”

She looked at him. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, Ember. I’ll be on the porch if you need to call for reinforcements.”

Chapter twenty-six

"I can go back about five generations."

Jake was on the porch looking at the stars. It was another beautiful clear night, and it seemed he could reach right up and touch them. The three-quarter moon was low in the sky and laid a path of light across the meadow in front of the house. He was on his second beer, enjoying the cool night air. Soon it’d be too cold to sit outside without a coat on. All five dogs were on the porch with him. Three of them would come into the house when he went to bed. But Decker and Mick were the watchdogs. They each had a nice dog house to sleep in on the porch. Though when it got cold, they’d both sleep in the same one.

When the door opened, Jake turned to see Ember coming through it.

“You’re not covered in stew, so I’m guessing it went okay.”

She smiled. She had a really nice smile. “It went fine. We talked and came to an agreement. The sooner he cooperates and gets back to his oldself, the sooner he can be rid of me.”

Jake laughed. “I’m willing to bet he’s not going to want to get rid of you anytime soon.”

She looked at the dogs. “I haven’t been introduced to these guys yet.”

Jake pointed at each one as he named them off. “Rosie, Daisy, Ira, Decker, and Mick.”

“Nice to meet you all.” She moved to the rail and stood a foot away from him. When she saw the sky, she gasped. “Oh my gosh. I’ve never seen so many stars.”

“We have a few million extra ones up here.”
