The creature paced its enclosure, its claws scraping against the cold, unforgiving metal floor. It let out a haunting, tortured wail that scarred my soul, stirring a mix of emotions I could barely comprehend.

The room was filled with the eerie glow of a magical containment field, casting an ethereal light on the creature. Itadded to the surreal and unsettling ambiance, a stark contrast to the sterile concrete walls that surrounded it.

The creature’s agitation only grew, its movements becoming increasingly frantic as Kranston neared its cell. “This is... unsettling.”

“So is the smell,” Indy said.

Kranston nodded. “It’s not taking to the transition. The human cells are rejecting the demon cells. This didn’t happen with the first generation of hybrids.”

“Could it be the species? Maybe Haure are not compatible with humans.”

Kranston scratched his chin. “The hybrids should not have been possible in the first place. It appears to be in pain. I am unsure how to treat it.”

Daryn crossed his arms. “Run any tests you need. See if there is a way to slow the transition or, better yet, reverse it.”

Kranston nodded, but his gaze remained locked on the agitated haure.

Daryn motioned for us to follow him into the hallway. He led us silently from the room and waited for the door to the holding area to close before he spoke. “We need more information about the dark witch. We have little info on her. Who she was, what her powers are beside necromancy. How she was imprisoned. Most of all, who her ally is in Spirit Falls.”

Indy shook her head. “Who would be that insane?”

Daryn huffed. “My money would be on Cage, but he would have had to have been planning this before he was incarcerated.”

I glanced down the hallway toward the hunter temple. “Is there any chance that Magnus put this plan in motion before he died? We have no idea when she actually escaped. Maybe he found a way to weaken the wards, and she was only able to break them recently.”

“It’s possible. We need more information and satellite imagesof that mountain. Maybe we can discover who has been coming and going from that area recently.”

Indy tapped her hunter link. “Cipher, we need everything on the mountain that contained the dark witch’s prison. Full work up on her past as well.”

“The council had forbidden any research on her. I need clearance.”

Daryn’s eyes narrowed. “I just gave you clearance.”

Cipher’s typing clicked through the shared hunter link. “I know, but when I try and research her, I get a council block. That has never happened before. I think Amalie is the only one who can remove it.”

Daryn hit the pane; closest to us. “All available council members to the chamber now!” His tone denoted his anger and Indy arched her eyebrows.

“This is why you don’t shit where you eat,” she said.

Kaine shook his head. “No council member was expecting the gate to be returned to the hunter base.”

Indy turned to her brother as we started toward the elevator. “You are assuming that search restriction was put on by someone other than Amalie?”

Daryn’s eyes flickered as the elevator doors opened. “I don’t like being shut down in my own house. There better be one hell of an explanation for this.”

He hit the button for sub level four as we all stood in silence.
