I winced. “I should probably be insulted, but sadly, you’re right. I promise to do better in the future.”

“Okay,” her sister replied, “but today’s call is about…?”

Sighing, I asked, “Do you remember a Zack Noles from college?”

Dee laughed. “Are you crazy? Everyone knew Zack Noles. BMOC. Handsome as sin. A tight ass that made every college girl stare. Seemed like every female tried to get his attention. You got his attention and passed. I never understood that. Anyway, why?”

“I ran into him last night.”

“Oh, yeah? How does he look? Still sex-on-a-stick body?”

I swallowed hard. “He looks pretty good.”

“So, tell me about your reunion. Did you bring up that night in college?”

“Of course not. I, um…” I winced. “I pretended that I could barely remember that night.”

Dee howled. “I swear, Andi. You kill me. What happened?”

“You remember my neighbor, Lillian?”

“Of course. Nice lady.”

“She fell, maybe broke her hip or leg, I’m not sure. She called me to come over at two this morning. While I was there waiting on the ambulance, Zack came in to see why her front door was open,”

“Wait. How does Zack know Lillian?”

“Here’s an interesting tidbit. Zack lives in the house across the street that’s undergoing renovation.”

“Really?” Dee drew out the word. “And you didn’t know?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Back to my question, why was he checking on Lillian in the middle of the night?”

“I didn’t get a chance to say, but he’s a detective with the Dallas PD. He was just getting home and saw the door open.”

“Ohhh, a personal security guard. Nice.”

“You think you’re so funny.”

“I know, right?” Dee chuckled. “But back to Lillian…How is she doing today?”

“Robin called the hospital, claiming to be Lillian’s granddaughter. All she got was Lillian was in surgery.”

“Yikes. That doesn’t sound good at all.”

“No, it doesn’t. I plan to head up there shortly and find out what I can.”

“Well, this puts me in an awkward spot.”

“How? Oh, hold on a sec. Robin is waving from my door.” I covered the receiver with my hand. “What?”

“Detective Noles is here to see you.” Robin pumped her eyebrows and mouthed, “Yummy.”

“Dee, I’ll need to call you back. Zack Noles is here—no wait, he just walked into my office uninvited.”

I pointed to the phone as if Zack was too dense to understand I was talking on it. Why was I getting so flustered? Stress sweat trickled down my back. My heart began pounding like a base drum. What was wrong with me? Zack was simply standing in my office, not removing his clothes…not that a man removing his clothes in my office was something that’d ever happened. Still, it could happen, right?
