“Um. I have a power.”

Leia’s eyes widened. “What can you do?”

“I can calm people with a touch. I think it has to do with my ability to see auras.”

Leia and Chase looked at one another, and it seemed they spoke volumes without saying a word. It was Chase, however, who spoke again.

“I have premonitions of me and Thorn.”

“And I can see the shadow of death,” Leia added softly.

Vivi’s eyes widened. Were they messing with her? Could she trust them? “Okay, I’ll bite. How? Are we like mutants? Because I don’t really want to be blue and turn into people. Although, now that I’m thinking about it, maybe it would be cool to turn into a man. I’d really like to try to pee standing up.”

Chase chuckled. “I don’t think we’re mutants.”

“I visited a psychic who said those who’ve returned from the dead have to pay a price,” Leia said. “Thorn kissed Chase back to life.”

“He gave me CPR.”

“Same thing,” Leia replied. “I don’t remember what happened to me, so I must have been a baby.”

“Dead?” Vivi frowned. “Both of you?”

They nodded.

Vivi thought about the hazy image locked in her memory. “I have this flash of memory of looking up at an intense light. A doctor telling me it’s all right. My sister Zaylah told me later that when I was three, I had minor surgery to have tubes put in my ears and I flatlined on the table. Took the doctors almost an hour to stabilize me.”

“So, the theory holds up,” Leia murmured. “Maybe we are mutants and death is the trigger.”

“Yeah, but people are resuscitated all the time and they’re not getting premonitions. Or calming people with a touch.” Vivi looked between the two women. “Why us? What makes us different?”

“I don’t know,” Chase replied. “It does seem odd that we’ve found each other. I mean, what are the odds?”

“Something brought us together,” Leia declared.

“Yeah, but what?” Vivi asked. “Or who? And why?”

“I guess time will tell.”

None of them had any other answer, and Vivi couldn’t help the feeling of dread that slithered down her spine.

Chapter Twelve

Morning light pushed through the slats on the window blind, and one ray found its way across Vivi’s eyes. Tugged out of sleep, she blinked her eyes open and then groaned as the bright glare burned her retinas. When she rolled, she realized she was alone.

“Lincoln?” she called out.

No answer.

God, I need coffee and to pee. Not necessarily in that order.

Right before she rose, her gaze snagged on a photo album on his small bookshelf, and she remembered Lincoln mentioning his twin brother. Rising, she reached for it and flipped it open. Her bladder protested her decision not to find the bathroom right away, but curiosity had always been her undoing.

Two identical little boys stared blankly up at her, and she knew instantly which one was Lincoln. Parker looked a little too serious. A tad bit studious. Like he wasn’t quite happy with anything. Then she remembered Lincoln saying that he and his brother didn’t talk. At the time, she hadn’t really thought about that statement, but now, it broadcasted across her mind. The concept that two siblings, especially twins, wouldn’t be the best of friends boggled her mind. Zaylah may be crap at solving riddles, but Vivi loved her unconditionally. She even loved Brady, even though she was still angry with him.

Clearly, she had to find out why the twins didn’t talk. A new mission was born.

She rose and grabbed some clothes before hurrying to the bathroom. Half an hour later she headed downstairs and came to a halt once she reached the main room. Naked bodies littered almost every piece of furniture, all asleep and snoring. Seems like she missed the orgy. Bypassing legs and discarded condoms, she stepped into the kitchen and saw a man she hadn’t seen before. Granted, there were probably a lot of club members she hadn’t met, but there was no way she hadn’t seen this particular man. Skin the color of café au lait. A strong Nubian nose. Tall, with muscles that flexed under his tight t-shirt. The part of the tattoo on his arm that she could see involved swords and a samurai, black lines shaded with red.
