“So that’s different than not interested. Maybe, in time?—”

“I can’t think that way,” I interrupted her. “If I think that way, I’ll always have hope, and having hope is going to kill me.”

“I understand,” Addie said, reaching across the table and touching my hand. “I know how hard this is for you.”

“Do you really think he’s going to show up?” I asked anxiously, and Addie nodded.

“He’s going to show up,” she assured me, and for a second, I believed it.

The next second, I was sure he wasn’t going to show.

I looked at my watch. “It’s time to go,” I said, all the breath going out of my lungs.

Addie stood up when I did and hugged me again. “It’s going to be okay. The baby will be fine and Adam will be there.”

I smiled at her. “I’ll call you,” I told her, and she nodded and sat back down with a book in her hand.

I made my way to Dr. Christine’s office and when I walked into the waiting room, I paused to look for Adam.

But he wasn't sitting with the other waiting patients.

And he wasn’t at the receptionist’s counter either.

I cursed myself for having allowed hope in and went to grab my phone from my pocket to call Addie.

But then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone standing at the window slowly turn around. I wondered how I could have missed noticing him before.

He exuded the confidence of someone who was carrying around a million dollars in the pocket of his designer suit. And my eyes were magnetically pulled to meet his, as if he were the only person present in the busy doctor's office.

Adam.

I felt such relief that I thought my knees were going to give out.

He gave me an ‘I told you I’d be here’ look, then walked toward me and took my hand.

I let him lead me to a seat and sat down, feeling a little awkward, my palms sweaty.

“Thank you for coming,” I said softly.

“I hope you never doubted I would,” he replied, smiling at me.

He seemed happy, almost excited.

“You look like you’re in a good mood,” I said.

“Well, I didn’t get to do any of this with Colin,” he explained. “I didn’t get to see any ultrasounds or even witness his first steps or hear his first words. This is like a second chance for me.”

I smiled, liking that he was excited for this baby and not just accepting it. “That’s good to hear.”

“And I’m glad it’s with you, Katie. You’ll be an amazing mother.”

I sniffled. Adam was going to make me cry before we even got to the ultrasound.

“I’m so glad you’re here,” I admitted as the doctor called me back.

“Is this your husband?” Dr. Christine asked, and I quickly shook my head.

“I’m the father,” Adam said proudly, and sat down next to the bed.
