I looked at him after Dr. Christine left me with a gown. “Turn around.”

“Nothing I haven’t seen before,” he said with a wink, making me blush.

God, Adam was so full of mixed signals. He’d said he wanted to be in my life, but not in what capacity, and he’d seemed so shocked that I was pregnant. Now he was excited, almost flirty.

I was happy, but also slightly annoyed about his change in demeanor, it was confusing.

I’d been freaking out all week, and it turned out that he was happy to be there.

As I took off my clothes and put on the gown, he turned. I walked over to the bed and laid down.

Adam sat up near my head and held my hand, looking down at my still-flat belly. No baby bump yet, but I knew it was coming.

The ultrasound technician came in with a big smile.

“Hi Mommy and Daddy! Let’s see what we’ve got going on here.

I squeezed Adam’s hand as she lifted my gown and poured some ultrasound gel on my belly, and he squeezed back. She took the wand and started to rub it in circles, clicking here and there on the keyboard as she did so.

The screen was faced away from us and my heart was in my throat, waiting for the sound of the heartbeat.

Then, as I held my breath, the whooshing sound of the heartbeat came through the machine. It was strong, steady, but it also sounded off.

“What’s wrong?” I asked quickly. “The heartbeat, it doesn’t sound right.”

“It’s perfectly normal with twins,” the ultrasound technician said, and this time it was Adam who squeezed my hand first, almost too tightly. It hurt a little and I winced.

“Excuse me?” I asked, my face going pale.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you knew.” She turned the ultrasound machine toward us, pointing out two little peanuts. “There’s one, and there’s the other. Identical twins, from what I can tell, looks like they’re sharing the same chorion sac.”

“We’re having two babies?” Adam choked out.

She smiled. “You certainly are.”

“Oh, my God,” I said, shell-shocked. Two newborns instead of one? I was never going to sleep again, especially if I had to do this alone...

Adam patted my hand. “Twice the love,” he said and his voice sounded shaky. When I looked at him, there were tears in his blue eyes.

I let my own tears spill down my cheeks, smiling at the same time.

Maybe we could do this. Maybe everything would be alright. Maybe these two babies and Colin would be my family.

Maybe Adam would be a part of it.

Chapter 19

Adam

Iwas bouncing my leg in my seat as the doctor printed out ultrasound pictures for me and Katie. I couldn’t wait to tell Colin that he would be a big brother not to one, but to two siblings.

“Do you think they’ll be boys or girls?” I asked excitedly, and Katie just stared at me. She looked pale. “Are you okay, Katie?”

“We’re having two babies,” she muttered, and didn’t even ask me to turn around as she got dressed.

I turned around, anyway, wanting to respect her privacy even if the curves of her body appealed to me way too much.

In fact, now that I knew she was having my babies, I wanted her even more. There was nothing sexier, in my opinion.
