“Aw, come on. You don’t have a drink. Let me get you one.”

“No, thank you.”

“Why?”

Is this guy for real?

“Because I’m not interested.”

“You seemed interested when I walked over.”

“I wasjokingwith you because of our costumes. Let me blow away the mystery for you. I have a boyfriend. I’m not looking to replace him. If I were, it wouldn’t be with you. Have I covered all the bases?”

Batman is no longer smirking. “There’s no reason to be a bitch.”

“Then stop being one and go the fuck away,” I mutter, looking down at my phone so maybe he’ll get the hint.

“Hey, don’t fucking talk to me like that. Who do you think you are?”

I look up, eyes wide, as this asshole grabs my arm like he’s gonna do something. “I’d take your hands off me if I were you.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

“What if I don’t want to? What if I don’t like girls who dress like sluts and flirt with guys, then pretend they don’t like the attention? What are you gonna do about it, huh?”

He tries to be intimidating since I pissed him off, but I’m unmoved. Clearly, he doesn’t know taunting is an art form, and I’m dating the master.

Awareness prickles along the back of my neck and tingles down my spine, but I don’t feel fear. Batman’s the one who should be afraid.

I glance over his shoulder and see Dare’s gaze locked on us, the smile dropping right off his face when he registers the sight of some other guy’s hand on my arm.

I smile up at Batsy, a flash of Harley-esque mischief dancing in my eyes. Dragging out my Harley voice again, I tell him, “Mr. J’s gonna make you wish you hadn’t done that.”

“Oh yeah?” His grip loosens a little now that I’m playing ball, but I don’t give a fuccckkkk.

I feel warm all over as my beautiful monster of a boyfriend stops behind him and plants a firm hand on his shoulder. “Time to fly back to your cave, Batman.”

Batman’s hand drops away from my arm now that my boyfriend is actually standing here.

“Hey, puddin’,” I say warmly, stepping away from the wall and throwing my arms around my Joker’s neck.

His arm naturally winds around me, locking tight and forcing me close to his body. “Is my mermaid tower shopping?”

He doesn’t lean down to kiss me, and I’m too drunk to stand on my tiptoes in these heeled boots without possibly twisting an ankle, so I just curl close to his chest like I needprotecting and affect a pout that feels Harley-esque. “Batsy here was trying to steal me away from you.”

Dare cocks an eyebrow, but Batman isn’t so brave now that he’s faced with my imposing boyfriend and all he has is a nylon cape and plastic muscles.

“We were just joking around,” Batman assures him.

“Yeah?” Dare offers a threatening smile that looks much creepier with his Joker makeup on. “I love a good joke. Why don’t you tell it to me?”

Batman chuckles but grows uncomfortable as Dare continues to stare at him. “I guess you had to be there. It probably… wouldn’t sound as funny to you.”

Dare nods, his gaze still unwavering. “I bet it wouldn’t.”

Batman breaks first and looks away, but Dare’s cold stare remains locked on him for as long as he stands there. Unsurprisingly, Batman sees someone he has a sudden, urgent need to talk to on the other side of the room and walks away.
