My heart lifts a little when I see Hannah liked my post. She usually doesn’t like the ones Dare is in, but I posted two pictures on the same post tonight—one of just me in my sexy Harley Quinn costume, and one of me with Dare in his Joker costume, too.

I click her name to see if she posted a picture of herself in her costume, but there are no posts from tonight.

I tap the message button and type out, “Happy Halloween!” I attach a little jack-o’-lantern emoji and a cute, spooky ghost and push send.

“Happy Halloween!” she answers a moment later. “I love your costume. Seems cold for an East Coast party though.”

“It is,” I admit. “I didn’t fully realize how cold it got here when I ordered the booty shorts. It snowed yesterday! Not enough to stick, but snowflakes fell from the sky. I’m LITERALLY freezing my ass off. It sure is pretty, though.”

“Your ass or the weather?” she teases.

I grin. “The weather. I try not to admire my own ass too much.”

“Gotta stay humble.”

Still smiling, I type back, “Exactly. The fall foliage scene is really pretty here, though.”

“Oh, I bet it is.”

“Have you ever been?”

“No, but I’d love to someday.”

A vivid image springs to mind of Hannah bundled up in a warm, pale blue coat with white mittens and a soft scarf wrapped around her. Her cheeks are flushed, snowflakes clinging to her soft blond curls as she turns to look at me. I’m cold, too, but I feel warmer when she smiles at me. It’s hot chocolate weather, and I bet Hannah makes great hot chocolate.

“I think you’d like it here. I wish you could visit,” I type and send without hesitation since I’ve had a bit to drink tonight.

“Me too,” she answers.

“What about you?” I type, pulling myself back to reality. “I don’t see any pictures of your costume. Did you dress up? Are you doing anything fun tonight?”

Movement catches my eye. Dare usually stays close to me at parties, and he’s been talking to his friends for a while so I might think it’s him coming back to his home base, but myperipherals register a lot of black. Dare is dressed up as Joker tonight in mostly purple and green, only his dress shirt beneath the vest is black.

I crack a smile when I look up and see a guy in a Batman costume, cape and all. “Hello, Harley.”

“Hey, Batsy,” I say, affecting my best Margot Robbie Harley voice. “You lookin’ for Mr. J?”

Batman smirks. “If I were, I think you’d be an adequate distraction.”

I fan myself. “I love when a fella calls me adequate.”

Batman laughs outright, stepping away from the walkway and moving over to lurk in the shadows with me. “And I like a girl with a sense of humor.”

“Oh, I’m sure there are plenty around here,” I say, glancing around the party. I was playing with him because of the costume, but I’m not remotely interested in talking to him. I want to get back to my conversation with Hannah while Dare isn’t paying attention.

“Why keep looking when I’ve already found one?” he asks, leaning against the wall and facing me.

“This one’s taken. Sorry, pal.”

“Well, sure, if you like slumming it with a villain, but wouldn’t you rather have the rich kid with all the muscles?” he jokes.

“Why choose?”

Sleazy Batman smirks, utterly misinterpreting my quip. “I’m not opposed to a threesome, but I’d prefer another girl. You got an adventurous friend as hot as you at this party?”

Ew.

Dropping my Harley voice, I say, “Yeah, no thanks.” I’m tempted to push off the wall and walk away from him, but this ismyspot. Why should I be the one to leave? “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to get back to what I was doing before you swept in and interrupted.”
