She narrows her eyes, studying me. “I bet he lost his mind when he saw you.”

I think of how he barked at me.

He lost his shit is more like it.

“Why do you say that?” I ask.

“Well, you’re gorgeous and don’t need to paint your face to look good. You seem like a low-maintenance woman. I think that’s something my brother would appreciate.”

“Yeah, I am. Don’t get me wrong, I like to get dolled up occasionally, but not daily. Why would he appreciate that?”

Well, Niall’s last girlfriend was the highest fucking maintenance possible. That shit wore on him after a while.”

“Oh really?” I say casually, while my brain is shoutingtell me more.

“Yep. She’s a model and won’t leave the house without every hair in place. I think she even sleeps with makeup on because I once saw her in the morning, and she was all done up. Either that or she sleeps standing.”

I laugh at the image her words conjure in my mind. I think of the minis at Calista and Ryder’s farm for some reason. “She must have some redeeming qualities if your brother dated her.” I’m trying to be diplomatic, which isn’t easy regarding Niall.

“Do you know who Destiny is?” Maeve asks.

I press my lips together and shake my head. “I don’t know anyone by that name.”

Maeve looks upward, slowly ticking her head as if disappointed in me. “Not someonenamedDestiny. I’m talking aboutthe Destiny.”

Holy crap. She’s so famous she only needs one name.

“Wow.” That’s all I manage to say.

“Don’t let her fame fool you. She’s only beautiful on the outside.”

“That’s too bad.”

“Lucky for her, most people are so wowed by her striking looks they probably don’t care what lies beneath. Niall learned the hard way how vile she is.”

I’m about to reply when I hear a shrill ringing. Maeve reaches into the front pocket of her hoodie, pulling out her cell phone. She glances at the screen before answering. “Hello.” She listens briefly before saying, “I’m next door. I’ll be home in a few. Bye.” She tucks her phone back in her pocket and rolls her eyes. “That was Rogan. He needs help making dinner.”

“Are you two close?”

“All three of us are. I love them even when I want to slam their heads together to knock some sense into them.”

“Men, in general, inspire that urge,” I say.

Especially Grumpalupagus.

“Let me help you clean up before I go,” she says.

“You’re sweet to offer, but it’s two bowls and two waters. I’ve got this.”

She grabs her half-full bottle. “Make that one. It’s been a lot of fun hanging out with you, Lucy.”

“Ditto.”

“I’m bummed Rogan is ruining our crab dip and margarita portion of the night.” She pouts her lips.

“Swing by sometime tomorrow, and we’ll have it then.”

Her blue orbs fill with excitement as she repeatedly nods. “Okay.” She grins and then jogs down the porch stairs. I catchsight of her as she crosses the driveway next door. Before she walks up the front stairs, she pauses to wave. “See you tomorrow, bestie.”
