“I want to be on her show too,” Murphy says.
“You should. She’d like that. Anyway, I offered to be on her show in exchange for her pretending to be my fiancée.”
Murphy makes a sputtering sound. “I’d be on her show without needing a favor.”
“Dude, let the man finish speaking,” Darius says.
“Lucy agreed to the arrangement. I explained what happened with Destiny, and she was kind and sympathetic. When we fly home tomorrow morning, I’m going to pack a bag and go camping overnight with Lucy and her crew.”
“How will you get the word out about your engagement?” Kaiden asks.
“We’ve got that fundraiser coming up.”
“That’s a good idea. We’ll all be there to have your back,” Darius says.
“With any luck, my plan will work and the media will talk about me in a new light.”
“It’s almost midnight,” Ryder says. “I’m heading back to my room to ring in the new year with Calista.” He disappears into the hallway.
Murphy makes a jerking-off motion. “Yeah, ‘ring in the New Year.’ I’m gonna go call Wendy.” He leaves without another word.
“I’m going to call Evie,” Darius says, walking toward the door.
“If you guys don’t come back, I’m eating all the food,” Kaiden says.
“I’ll be back in a few. I’m sure you want to call Rori,” I say.
Kaiden smiles at the mention of her. “It’s tough being away on holidays.”
I hold up my phone. “That’s why these things come in so handy. I’ll see you in a bit.” My room is just down the hall from his and set up exactly the same. Sitting down on the bed, I type out a text.
Me:I hope you’re having a great time wherever you are.
She responds immediately.
Lucy: I’m home watching a movie with your sister. She’s lonely without her brothers.
Rogan left for Vail today.
Me: I’ll see her in the morning, and you too.
Lucy: We watched your game. Congratulations.
Me: Admit it, you’re my biggest fan now.
Lucy: Maybe.
I laugh.
Me: Happy New Year, Lucy.
Lucy: Happy New Year, Niall.
“You never told me how your flight was,” Lucy says.
“It was good. I slept through it all.”
“Sounds familiar,” she teases.
