“You should get some dinner,” I husk.

“What about you?” he asks.

“I’ll be right behind you.”

“Okay.” His long stride covers the distance in half the steps it would take me. I turn my back toward Niall and my crew and draw in slow, deep breaths until my heart rate has gone back to normal.

Brandon and Isaac amble in from the edge of the campsite toward me.

“Dinner’s ready,” I tell them.

“Awesome,” Brandon says, running toward the table.

“Thank you, Lucy,” Isaac says, taking off after him.

“Here you go.” Niall appears with two plates in his hand. “I wasn’t sure what you like, so I added a bit of everything.”

“Thank you. You didn’t have to wait on me.”

“I wanted to. You prepared all this food. Bringing you some is the least I can do,” he says. “Let’s sit by the fire.”

“Sounds good.” Choosing the closest chair, I balance my full plate in my lap.

He pulls napkins from the front pocket of his hoodie and hands me one. I laugh. “What else are you hiding in there? A bottle of water?” I ask in a hopeful tone.

“Oh shoot. I forgot drinks.” He moves to rise, and I waylay him with my hand on his arm.

“Watch this. Isaac, will you please bring me a couple of waters?”

“Yes, ma’am.” He jumps from his seat, grabs the bottles from the cooler, and delivers them to me.

I smile. “Thank you.”

“Anytime.” He returns to the chair and resumes eating.

I hand one over to Niall.

“You have an admirer,” he says.

“He’s a sweet kid. Polite as can be. I don’t usually take advantage of his willingness to please me.”

He shrugs. “Eh, he’s young. We all have to earn our stripes.”

“Are you disappointed we didn’t come across Bigfoot today?” I ask.

“Not really. I figured the odds were against a sighting, but I still had fun with you.”

With you.

“I had fun with you too. You can be on my show any time you want.”

“Let’s see how the rest of tonight and tomorrow go before you extend that offer.”

“I think it’ll be smooth sailing. You’re a natural,” I say.

After we’ve all eaten dinner and dessert, and everything is cleaned up and put away, Niall fetches his guitar from his tent. “Any requests?” he asks.

“Can you play any Tom Petty?” Barry asks.
