Aang beams at my question as he pulls out his phone. “She’s wonderful. One month old tomorrow. She’s got a strong set of lungs.” He chuckles, showing me a photo of the little newborn cherub.

“She’s so cute. If your granddaughter and her husband are ever in the city, please have her reach out.”

“Will do,” he replies, smiling and putting his phone back in his pocket.

“Geoff, I hope your father is feeling better,” I say before sipping my tea.

“You remembered.” His eyebrows rise. “He’s doing just fine. The hard part is getting him to rest.”

It’s good to hear he’s on the mend, since his father just had a triple bypass surgery.

“Rocky, great work getting the trade setup with the Russians. Your father must be proud. I’m sorry he couldn’t make it.”

Rocky sits up straighter.

He’s in his mid-twenties and learning to take over for his father.

“He is, too, and apologies for not being here. And thank you, I’m also glad it worked out.”

My eyes shoot to my unhappiest captain.

“Isaac,” I say dryly, “I hear you’re having some issues.”

He slams his drink down, causing it to splatter onto the table. “Of course I am.” He looks around at the other men for backup. “She is a child!”

“I’m only gonna remind you one time who you’re speaking about and to.”

Bo’s tone is so deadly even I get hit with a wave of goose bumps.

“We are not seriously taking orders from a teenage girl.”

This conversation again. I have to pinch my wrist to not roll my eyes.

“She is the Liu heir. There is nothing to discuss,” Bo replies calmly.

I learned only a few months ago the truth about my father. He was the dragon head of the Triad until my mother’s brother, Andrew, claims to have murdered him. He confessed it to me himself. I killed him before I could get any answers.

“My son was raised in the Triad since he was born. He could—”

Ethan slams a fist on the table, causing glasses to turn over. “Enough!”

“You can’t be serious,” Isaac argues.

“Are you suggesting treason at my table?”

“Of course not, Ethan. But I’m asking you to see reason. I’m simply—”

“I will not hear of this in my own home,” Ethan spits, chest pumping.

His face is turning so red he resembles a tomato.

Ethan was a gentle man and doting father and husband, but his loyalty was unwavering, and his temper was exactly what made him one of the most respected men in the Triad. Unlike Isaac, who’s a snake through and through.

His wife, who he abuses daily, hates him. I don’t blame her, since he often brought his flavor of the week to events with his wife and children in attendance. Regardless, his family is extremely powerful, so I have to tread lightly, though I’m secretly praying for him to fuck up colossally so I can be justified for picking him off myself.

Isaac throws his towel down on the table. “She is a wài rén!”

I’m all too familiar with that word.Outsider.
