“Have you done anything like this? We don’t have any rules when we train like this,” Grayson explains, and I fight the urge to roll my eyes.

“I’ve dabbled here and there.”

“Okay, if you get scared, just tap my shoulder twice or say stop. I don’t want to hurt you.” His tone is completely genuine rather than the usual condescending one I get from men, and I almost feel bad for what I’m about to do to him.Almost.

“Got it,” I say as I get into a fighting stance.

He lifts his arms up lazily as if he doesn’t intend to put in any real effort. He’s going to learn today.

I bounce between each foot as I circle him. Knowing he won’t make the first move, I go for it. Not really trying, just enough to force him to do something. He blocks every hit, as expected.

“Come on, don’t go easy on me just because I’m a girl,” I taunt.

“All right, all right.” He rushes forward as I evade each hit. His eyebrows shoot up in surprise.

I swing my leg out, aiming for his side. He grunts from the impact, and I punch him right in the kidney. He hunches over, and before he can recover, I take out his knees, landing on his back with a thud.

His friends stop laughing, their jaws practically on the floor. Grayson looks up at me, appearing confused and shocked.

I reach out to help him up with a triumphant smile.

“Where the hell did that come from?”

“Beginner’s luck?” I shrug innocently.

Grayson charges forward with more force than the last time. I use my forearms to block each hit. My head swings back as he manages to get me good in the jaw.

“Oh shit, are you al—ahh—”

I punch him in the nose, and as he swings his hand back, I kick at his legs. But before he falls, he grabs me and takes me down with him.

Damn, he’s quick. Leaning my head forward, I use the momentum to swing it back with force into his nose, causing his grip on me to loosen. I’m able to maneuver around, pressing my knee into his chest as I sweep at his face twice.

He swipes his leg up, knocking me forward. He moves to straddle my back, but I’m too quick, as I elbow his knee and pop up to my feet.

The shift in his eyes tells me he’s now seeing me as a real opponent. I give him a sweet smile. Allowing Grayson to come to me, I turn to elbow him. As expected, he reaches around me, and I use his momentum to flip us over. Landing on top of him with my back to him, I lean my head forward before ramming it into his nose. He loosens his grip, and I jerk my elbow into his face, but he blocks the hit. I quickly stand over him and press my foot into his chest.

He raises his hands to his sides.

“So, the rumors are true,” he pants, looking up at me.

The corners of his mouth turn up. That answers my first question.

“And you know more than you let on,” I reply as I remove my foot and wipe the sweat off of my brow. His friends scurry up to us.

“Damn, I did not see that coming,” Yousef yells and pats me on the back.

“What happened, Gray?” Mikey taunts.

“Eh, she just caught me by surprise, that’s all! I didn’t want to hurt her,” Grayson replies, but I can sense the confusion as well. “Give us a minute.”

He nods over to the bench, and I snag my water bottle before following him to take a seat. After minutes of silence, drinking, and catching our breaths, Grayson is the first to speak up.

“Something you want to tell me.”

“Nope,” I reply before chugging my water bottle.

“Look, I know you don’t trust me. You have no reason to, but I meant what I said. I just wanted the chance to get to know you. I’ll sign whatever you want me to sign—NDAs, waivers, statements, so I have no right to your money.”
