I laugh. “More like an incentive. You can do whatever you want with it. Keep it, sell it, burn it, but it’s yours either way.”

Most of the contents in the folders were just properties from land to full-on buildings I’d inherited around the states and other assets that belonged to our dad. Nothing that would directly tie him or me to the Triad. Whatever he chose to do with his new fortune would have no consequence to me.

“Why are you doing this?”

“There’s no reason that I deserve any of this more than you do.”

“But—”

“This is a start, Grayson. I know it doesn’t make things right, and we still have a lot to cover and learn about each other. But this is the one thing I know I can do for you right now.”

“Thank you. This is more than generous,” he replies as there’s a knock at my door.

My husband doesn’t wait before he enters.

“Can I have a minute with yourbrother?” Nico asks.

“Sure,” I answer, rolling my eyes before looking at Grayson.

“I’ll have my financial adviser reach out to you, to help you figure out your options. Wouldn’t wanna get picked up for something silly, like tax evasion,” I joke.

I stroll up to my man as he leans down, and I drop a kiss on his cheek before leaving the two of them to discuss whatever it is my husband wants.

Chapter Twelve

NICO

Once I hear the click of the door, I head to where my wife was just seated. Grayson’s head follows my every move.

“Is this the part where you tell me not to hurt Anya or you’ll kill me? Because as her brother, I’m pretty sure it should be the other way around,” Grayson quips, but there’s no humor in his tone.

I don’t respond right away. Instead, I stare at him.

The clearing of his throat signifies his discomfort.

“Last June, you submitted an application to the FBI.”

Smirking, he doesn’t look surprised that I’ve already looked into him.

“Then, you already know I was rejected.”

“And now you’re here.”

“Are you going to ask me something, or are you just going to keep stating the obvious?” he challenges.

“How does one go from working for the government to—”

“A life of crime?”

“Joining the family,” I amend.

“That’s not really any of your business, brother-in-law.”

“My wife is my business.” I consider decking him across the face.

Anya would be mad, but she’d get over it. I’m certain.

“Are you going to stop her?”
