“Slow is good.” He spread his knees open wide as he sighed in pleasure, a tiny smile curving the corner of his mouth. “Take your time, babe.”

Chapter Thirty-One

Making Plans

After Holt came—with him swearing in a tight voice that it hadn’t jarred his back—we got out of the hot tub. He gingerly lowered himself onto a sun lounger while I waded down the steps at the shallow end of the pool, the cold water making me shiver but feeling especially good after the heat.

In between me swimming laps, we talked about all kinds of stuff. Our childhoods, what we’d got up to in our twenties—Holt had travelled, so his stories were far more interesting than mine—and some of our favourite things, like my teensy addiction to pistachios and Holt’s love of trawling through thrift shops for the weirdest knickknacks he could find.

“That sounds fun.” I propped my arms on the edge of the pool, grinning at him sprawled in a sun lounger.

“Wanna go next weekend? There’s one with a cool hidden room for supernatural stuff.”

I perked up immediately. “Seriously? That’s awesome. What kind of stuff do they have?”

He waved a hand. “Just junk. Cursed objects, old Seeing crystals, dried up elixirs that the fae tend to find while cleaning out dead relatives’ attics. Shit like that. But it’s fun to look through.”

I stared at him in mild horror. “Cursed objects?”

“They’re usually labelled,” he said with a dismissive shrug.

“Usually?”

“Babe, don’t worry.” He lifted his sunglasses to wink at me. “Empyn, remember? I can sense if something is, like, shrouded in dark energy or whatever.”

“You can?”

“I mean…” He shrugged, then dropped his sunglasses back onto his nose and tilted his face toward the sun. “Most of the time.”

“Would I be allowed to go in there?” I asked doubtfully, legs swishing under the water. “Won’t, um, supernatural people be able to tell I’m human? If I don’t smell like lemons,” I added with a tiny smile.

“There are some humans who know about us. If they don’t cause problems, it’s not a huge deal, I guess. Besides, who would believe them if they started talking about vampires or werewolves actually being real? I’ll vouch for you anyway, babe. They won’t question it if you’re with me.”

“Okay.”

“Or we can spray you with lemon juice so you smell like a lampyr, if it makes you more comfortable.” Holt lifted his head to grin at me.

I laughed, pushing off the wall to float lazily through the water. I tilted my head back to soak up the sun. This was so nice. I hadn’t spent a Saturday like this in years. I was relaxed and happy, my belly pleasantly full from breakfast, my body still thrumming from the countless orgasms I’d had. Holt was sprawled out naked on a sun lounger, and my view of him from the pool—directly between his spread thighs—was an extremely enjoyable one. We’d already made plans to spend time together next weekend.

I didn’t think I could get much happier.

“How’s your back feeling?” I asked, lifting my head from the water to look at him.

“A little better.” Holt sat up with a groan and tugged off his hat and sunglasses, then reached into the pocket of his discarded robe for a hair tie and pulled his long hair into a messy bun as he stood. “I’ll get in with you.”

I waded lazily over to the shallow end as he descended the steps, his copper legs—and balls—gleaming in the sun. The moment he reached me, he wrapped his arms around my neck with a grin. I smiled back, palming his ass and lifting him easily in the water as his legs twined around my hips.

“Mmm, this is nice.” He pressed a kiss to my wet cheek. “Just carry me around the pool, babe.”

I laughed, moving lazily through the water with him wrapped around me. “What time do you need to go into work later?”

He made a face. “Shouldn’t get there any later than about four. Just to make sure everything’s okay for the show tonight. Deal with whatever little diva problems the wrestlers have today.”

I snorted. “By ‘the wrestlers,’ do you mainly mean Corey?”

He rolled his eyes. “Yeah, but I can usually calm him down and smooth things over. He’s an amazing performer, so I always try to listen, at least. And he’s loyal. He’s been with me since the beginning. He introduced me to a few of the others.”

“Which ones?” I asked with interest.
