“What bet?” Laney perks up. Now it’s my turn to shoot Arrow the evil eye.

“Havoc here bet that whoever killed the last guy would get to use the new toys we ordered on the others. You killed him, so you won.”

She squeals in excitement, clapping her hands together.

“What are these new toys?”

I roll my eyes and lean back, grabbing the supplies out of the med kit I’ll need to clean out a dog bite. “They were supposed to be for you and Arrow.”

“Tell her what they are, brother.” Arrow eyes me from the rear view mirror, and I stick my tongue out at him.

“Two rose gold anal plugs. One of them has a rainbow jewel.”

Laney falls over in her seat with laughter, and Arrow snorts, glancing back at me with a smirk. “Who did you plan to use those on?”

“Not myself. I’m a top, not a bottom.”

Laney turns around in her seat, a huge grin on her face I can’t help but soften for.

“Guess this time you’re going to bemybottom.”

Chapter 18

There’s a door in front of me. I can’t remember whose it is, but I know I don’t want to open it. I look around the room as pieces of the wall fade to black. Everything around me begins to dissipate, turning to ash until all that’s left is that door.

I don’t have to move, but something is pushing me towards it. A force I don’t want to name. I ball my fists, trying to tell myself to turn around, but it’s no use.

The invisible force keeps me in its clutches, luring me closer until I’m less than an inch away. I don’t want to reach out. So when I hesitate, I know it’s not me lifting my hand, but something else all together.

The smell of moth balls and blood greets me first. It’s so overwhelming that I want to vomit the second the door creaks open an inch. An eerie light illuminates the room, burning my eyes. I squint and try to take a step back, but all that’s behind me is a black pit, a void I’m terrified of falling into. I have no choice but to keep moving.

The sound of a piano plays in the distance. Slowly, the television in the room comes into view. A familiar cartoon plays on the screen that makes me smile. I can’t remember the name, but I remember it was about two brothers and it always made me laugh with someone.

The brothers were geniuses and built crazy contraptions to enjoy for just one day. I always wanted to do the same thing.

There’s a figure lying in the bed in front of me. I want to go to them, I have a need burning in me to check on them. When I finally work up the nerve to reach out, it’s cold and still. Lifeless.

A gasp leaves me before all of the air is stolen from my lungs. The floor below me opens up, and I’m swallowed by pitch black. I try to grab onto something, try to yell and fight, but it’s no use. I’m falling, and there’s no one to save me.

I jolt awake, sweat coating my face as I gulp down air. Laney startles next to me, her hand moving to my back for comfort. I don’t wake up like this much since we’ve moved into the house together, but this is the third night in a row that it’s happened.

Ever since I got the call from the woman who claimed to be my mother.

I don’t know why it’s got me so worked up. I can’t even remember my mother. The more I try, the more I realize I don’t think that I want to remember her or anything before Ma.

Pulling the covers back, I walk out of the room in a daze. I don’t want to lay back down. I don’t want to remember what Ijust dreamt about because part of me knows it wasn’t a dream, and I’m not ready to face that just yet.

Evie was able to dig up a little bit of information about who my mother was, but not much. Boris informed me that it was his man that killed my father the night Ma took me away. Although, he wasn’t sure who he was at the time. Ma gave him an address and he did as promised.

In the last three days, Lev came over to set up a new security system and has had drones monitoring the area as well. We believe the reason they were able to attack us so skillfully was because they were monitoring us on the property and overheard the plan. We won’t make that mistake again.

Sensors have been placed in all of the walls to prevent anyone from hearing through them, even with the most advanced equipment. It was something we planned to do with the house eventually, but figured we had time to set up the security measures.

I walk outside to the patio and take a seat in the lounge chair. The weather is finally warm, and we have been trying to take advantage of that. One thing I definitely don’t miss are the Russian winters. It makes me realize why these people love vodka and look pissed off all of the time.

So I try to soak in every evening I can out on the patio. We have dinners outside and even nap out here when the sun is hidden away. There’s a round swing bed in particular that Laney loves to cuddle up on, but I prefer the lounger.

Looking up at the stars, I try to remember how small of a person I am in the grand scheme of things and focus on the fact that my problems aren’t the biggest out there. Just the sheer thought of falling into that black pit makes my breath come in short pants like I can’t get enough air into my lungs. It felt so real.
